Hens

There are hundreds of breeds of hen in existence. At the HART farm, we have:. Two Polish frizzle hens (feathers curling outwards rather than lying flat): sisters Fizz (white) and Fran (black and white like lace), born in 2012, who are full of character and happy to be picked up and stroked. One Pekin (Polly, born in 2013); a small bantam of Chinese origin with feathered feet and legs who lays tiny eggs. Three Indian Game hens: Isadora (white) and the cockerel, Indiana, who wakes everyone up every morning.

Ducks

Were first bred in 1901 in Mrs Adelle Campbell of Uley in Gloucestershire who wanted a breed of duck that would produce white table eggs and not be too broody. They waddle and rarely fly. We now have just one white Campbell, Delilah, born towards the end of 2011. Delia, Daisy, Dora and Donna (born in 2012): Daley one of our own ducklings hatched in 2014 and Digby (drake) who joined us in 2015 to improve our gene pool. Hart Books and Other Products.

Pygmy Goats

Are a breed of the miniature domestic goat that originated in the Cameroon Valley of West Africa and then made their way as pets to the USA in the 50s. The does can produce a quart of milk a day. Minidonkeys

Miniature Mediterranean donkeys are a unique and separate breed of donkey originating from the islands of Sardinia and Sicily where they were used to turn grinding stones for grain inside the peasants’ houses. They are generally between 30-34 to the shoulder. Here at the HART farm we have three, all born in 2011: Murphy is a white gelding from Devon, Martha (chocolate brown) and Milly (grey with a brown cross across her back) are step sisters from Henley-in-Arden. They are wonderfully calm.

Alpacas

Alpacas are the domesticated species of the South American camelid and look like a small lama. They live in herds on the heights of the Andes of Southern Peru, Northern Bolivia, Ecuador and Northern Chile at an altitude of 3500 5000 metres (11,500-16,000’). May 2016, Dilly duck has just brought 9 ducklings from her secret nest on the hill down to the lake! The first meeting of the HART steering group was held on Friday 13 May, efficiently chaired by Steve Haithwaite. There were fantastic contributions from everyone and many exciting initiatives.
