Picking from "the patch". This is a 365 day journal of our harvest from our aquaponics system. We want to use this so we can see and show just what can be harvested from 'the patch". Sunday, November 28, 2010. The weather here in Australia is warming up and just last week we had 3 days in a row above 30oC. It's time to start harvesting some trout. Here is Grace catching a rainbow trout. This is our friend April. This is a great pic and I'm not sure who is more scared. Her or the fish. Thats just not fair!

Saturday, October 16, 2010. We did get an awesome rainbow over the patch today though. Something nice out of all the rain we've been having and the tank is now over half full. Picking from "the patch". This is a 365 day journal of our harvest from our aquaponics system. We want to use this so we can see and show just what can be harvested from 'the patch". Friday, December 31, 2010. 365 days of aquaponics gardening. It's been an amazing journey of discovery for our little family. We've grown some amazing produce and fish and had some great times in amongst it all. We've tried many different methods including seedlings, seeds, mixing them all up, keeping them separate. Picking from "the patch". This is a 365 day journal of our harvest from our aquaponics system. We want to use this so we can see and show just what can be harvested from 'the patch". Tuesday, December 14, 2010. The first delicious, crisp, fresh salad of the season. Nothing could be better. Mixing fresh herbs into a variety of lettuce leaves and I'm in heaven. I just wish my pictures were better. Picking from "the patch". Tuesday, December 14, 2010. December 16, 2010 at 1:00 PM. Picking from "the patch".

Picking from "the patch". This is a 365 day journal of our harvest from our aquaponics system. We want to use this so we can see and show just what can be harvested from 'the patch". Sunday, August 29, 2010. This is a late post as I must have been distracted by a busy week and forgot to add this one. It's actually a good thing I guess. Last weekend we spent a wonderful morning in the patch with the girls. Seeing these images this morning gave me a great smile as it reminded me of how great it was. They a...

The Expensive Tomato: Overflow System
http://expensivetomato.blogspot.com/2011/02/overflow-system.html
Tuesday, February 1, 2011. This is what the bulkhead fitting will look like when it is set up in the tank. The top part is inside the tank and the bottom part is outside the tank. The white PVC pipe flows from the fish tank at the top of the photo. Posted by Jon Ezrine at 4:19 PM. That would be nice with the well water. In the summer, with the high evaporation, I have to keep several containers full of water, that can mellow-out, before being added to the system. February 1, 2011 at 10:34 PM.
The Expensive Tomato: Nothing dead yet (other than 15 cent goldfish)
http://expensivetomato.blogspot.com/2012/01/nothing-dead-yet-other-than-15-cent.html
Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Nothing dead yet (other than 15 cent goldfish). The new tilapia are doing well. Water temperature is hanging in the upper mid 70's and the fish are eating fine. No fish loss so far. Ammonia levels in control. Here are some broccoli sprouts that are doing well. They germinated in about 6 days and seem to be growing every day. Posted by Jon Ezrine at 5:01 PM. The Expensive Tomato: Fixing the Hole in the Roof
http://expensivetomato.blogspot.com/2010/12/fixing-hole-in-roof.html
Thursday, December 2, 2010. Fixing the Hole in the Roof. I took these photos last Saturday, but have been traveling since then and thought I would post them now. Here the roof is opened up and one of the side walls is in place. Burr is overseeing the progress from inside and hoping it won't rain. Framing out the new shed dormer. This new roofline will give us a lot of new space for work and storage. The framing takes shape, but the sun starts to set. Posted by Jon Ezrine at 11:09 AM. Links to this post:.
The Expensive Tomato: Slow Progress
http://expensivetomato.blogspot.com/2011/01/slow-progress.html
Monday, January 10, 2011. Making slow progress in the greenhouse. Quite a bit of distraction over the holidays, but Burr has been helping in the meantime. You can see the pavers that he laid out for the walking areas and the cinder block supports for the grow beds. We have had some snow fall over the holidays as well. With the new HVAC system (see below) I have kept the indoor temperature at a constant 50 degrees F. The heater was just in time for the winter snow! Posted by Jon Ezrine at 5:51 PM. Aquapon...
Horto in Urbs: May 2010
http://chicagogarden.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 24, 2010. Well, my cantaloupe seedlings are officially gone. RIP, cantaloupes, we hardly knew ye. I don't know if they got too cold in the last couple of weeks (remember the cool weather we used to have), or if there was some other factor, but they are kaput. On Saturday I direct-sowed some seeds in their place; we'll see if they do any better. In the win category, I went to turn my compost pile and found it steaming.in 85 degree weather! Hot composting, indeed. Links to this post. I'm a big ...
Horto in Urbs: Apple Tree update
http://chicagogarden.blogspot.com/2010/11/apple-tree-update.html
Sunday, November 7, 2010. Awhile back, I planted a stick in the ground that Henry Field's assured me was a Sweet Sixteen apple sapling. I was dubious it would turn into anything, because it was only about 18 inches long and not much bigger in diameter than a #2 pencil. I am pleased to report that it not only survived, but it's done pretty well:. November 7, 2010 at 1:15 PM. Hey David, thats awesome! Cant wait to see that awesome miracle grow. Horto in Urbs: June 2010
http://chicagogarden.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 24, 2010. So, we have started work on building a greenhouse to effect our plan of harvesting vegetables during the fall and winter. Thought I'd show some in-process photos. We are technically making a hoophouse, made of bent PVC arches and then greenhouse-gauge plastic sheeting which will go on in the fall. In the meantime, we'll cover the arches with deer netting to keep out the squirrels. Got that done all along the edge, and will install the arches soon. Later note: the dog decided that...
Horto in Urbs: April 2010
http://chicagogarden.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Of Apples and Crabapples. We've had this poor little crabapple tree on the side of our house since we moved in ten years ago. It's a little thing that looks like it was designed by Dr. Seuss, and we had often talked of getting rid of it. But it's pretty in the spring when it blooms, and now it has another purpose: cross pollination. Links to this post. Tuesday, April 20, 2010. State of the Garden. The garden improvements are coming along. I continued making a "channel" or f...
Horto in Urbs: The Greenhouse is Up
http://chicagogarden.blogspot.com/2010/11/greenhouse-is-up.html
Tuesday, November 2, 2010. The Greenhouse is Up. The greenhouse is up and functional. Here's a pictorial description of the process:. The structure with the deer (squirrel) netting still up and row covers on. A big hunk of greenhouse plastic, donated generously by my horticulturist friend Gwen. To get the plastic over the ribs, first put a rock on one side. Then attach a cord around the rock and pull the cord from the far side. The plastic is up and my 1-meter tall child stands in as a height reference.

Harvest 3:16 - Paul Harvey, SEO
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
