Tuesday, October 11. Wild Asters in Autumn. Mrs William Starr Dana admires the autumn aster in her book from 1900, How to Know The Wild Flowers:. This beautiful genus, like that of the golden-rod, is one of the peculiar glories of our country. The Harvest Moon Gazette: Growing Culinary Herbs Again

http://harvestmoongazette.blogspot.com/2016/08/growing-culinary-herbs-again.html

Thursday, August 4. Growing Culinary Herbs Again. Since leaving behind my herb garden in the city I've struggled with creating another garden. I think it's much like an artist looking at a blank canvas three times larger than they've worked with in the past. I was overwhelmed. However, after much experimentation I finally turned part of our yard into a garden area, starting with a round herb bed. I planted annual herbs and flowers until the perennial herbs fill in the bed. I included:. Is a blog about gr...

The Harvest Moon Gazette: April 2014

http://harvestmoongazette.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 30. Research on Altered Art. Many crafters use vintage photos, greeting cards or other paper combined with bit and pieces of cloth, buttons, ribbon and other textured items. To say I collect all these things is a bit of an understatement. I walked into my bedroom, opened the top drawer of my dresser, reached in and came out with these items:. Imagine that I've been collecting this type of thing for over 25 years and you get an idea of how much I love paper, cloth and ribbons. I did some ...

The Harvest Moon Gazette: Grilled Tilapia With Herbs

http://harvestmoongazette.blogspot.com/2016/08/grilled-tilapia-with-herbs.html

Monday, August 22. Grilled Tilapia With Herbs. There are many great healthy diets out there but my doctor recommended the Dash diet or the Mediterranean diet. My husband works in a hospital cath lab and the resident cardiologists all stand by the Mediterranean diet, so we're opting for that program. It consists of eating mostly fish and chicken, vegetables and good fats such as olive oil. Grilled fish is one of my favorite ways to eat fish. First, I gather a handful of lemon thyme from the garden. Edible...

The Harvest Moon Gazette: Valentine's Day is a Family Affair

http://harvestmoongazette.blogspot.com/2016/02/valentines-day-is-family-affair.html

Wednesday, February 10. Valentine's Day is a Family Affair. Valentine's Day was always rather melancholy for me until I met my husband in 1988. No one in my life really celebrated the holiday, and it left me feeling lonely and left out. My husband changed that for me:) We didn't have much money but I never felt as if the day passed me by because even the little things are romantic when it's the right person. You'll find the printable links and instructions HERE. For instructions and the printable graphics.

The Harvest Moon Gazette: August 2016

http://harvestmoongazette.blogspot.com/2016_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 31. The Beauty of Weeds. When life is not coming up roses. Look to the weeds. And find the beauty hidden within them. Wednesday, August 24. Edible Flowers in the Herb Garden. When buying herb plants and seeds I always look in the flower sections. Many herbs are also considered edible flowers. They are beautiful and can be used in salads, as a garnish, in vinegar, herb butter and much more. Calendula and Nasturtium varieties will often be listed in the flower sections of seed catalogs.

The Tradition of Hot Cross Buns

http://oldfashionedliving.com/holidays/hotcross.html

The Tradition of Hot Cross Buns. The Tradition of Hot Cross Buns. The Tradition of Hot Cross Buns. Designed by Brenda Hyde. Holiday traditions often have pagan, as well as Christian roots and many times the symbolism has been changed over time to adapt to those using it in their celebrations. I have found that what really matters is what value the tradition has in our own families, and our own communities. From the Grand Union Cook Book. 3/4 tsp. salt. 2 packages active dry yeast. 4 cups sifted flour.

Growing Jade Plants

http://oldfashionedliving.com/jadeplant.html

Houseplants and Indoor Care. Designed by Brenda Hyde. Jade, Crassula argentea, is a succulent. It does bloom under just the right circumstances, similar to Christmas cactus, but mine have never bloomed in four years. Many times when they are grown as houseplants they don't bloom, or at least not until they are very old. In their native environment jade plants can grow up to 10 foot tall! Another thing that is important is to always remove dead leaves or stems from the plant and pot. Keep the jade neat.

Growing and Using Oregano

http://oldfashionedliving.com/oregano.html

Designed by Brenda Hyde. True Greek oregano, which has the authentic taste that is used in dishes calling for oregano is sometime elusive. You need to grow Origanum vulgare subspecies hirtum (Origanum heracleoticum) which has small white flowers. It's important to ask question if something is simply labeled "oregano". Beware of descriptions that emphasize scent and ornamental use but don't discuss flavor. If the flowers are pinkish in color then chances are you have wild marjoram. 1/4 cup olive oil.

Wow, what a year! December 5, 2016. Hello my gardening friends. While the news in general has been downright crazy, it’s the weather that’s kept me and my clients in the lurch this year.
