Ramblings: April 2012

Saturday, April 7, 2012. A Walk in the Woods. The creek in its relaxed state. A rotting beech tree giving life to new plants. I doubt I will ever know the answer. The road-like pathway along the creek. Red admiral butterfly exploring the garlic mustard. The hidden bloom of wild ginger. Hepatica shining in the sun, but no blooms. My stoney path to the sandbar. Battered trees clinging to the sandbar. Plants finding root in a piece of driftwood. Remant of tumbled glass. My private little beach.

Monday, May 14, 2012. The Book of Love. Sixty four years ago today my parents stood together in a simple wedding at my Aunt Nellie’s home in Illinois to pledge their love and to promise a life together. They proudly upheld those vows for 62 years, until Mom’s passing in 2010. Their 25. Anniversary had been greeted with a surprise party, and their 50. Had brought the extended family and neighborhood friends together for a wonderful luncheon. But their 60. My parents at the time of their 50th anniversary.

Sunday, February 26, 2012. In 1940, two years after his passing, Thomas Wolfe’s final work was published. In it he wrote, "You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood . back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame . back home to places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time – back home to the escapes of Time and Memory.". The Warped and Faulty Reservoir. Just another WordPress.com site. Archive for June, 2012. The Grand, Time-Honored Tradition of Wimbledon? Posted by Jay in Uncategorized. The annual Wimbledon tennis tournament started up this week. Tennis is a sport that has produced many great rivalries over the years. Federer-Nadal, Sampras-Agassi, Evert-Navratilova, and perhaps the greatest of all in the late ’70s and early ’80s. I don’t mean those guys! I mean the one between me and my friend Dan…. Once our recurring ...

Ramblings: Uncovering the Past

Sunday, October 27, 2013. I have been in one of my nostalgic moods of late, and having some free time this weekend, I decided to take a car tip to the home of many of my earliest and happiest memories. I have written many times about my experiences at Raccoon Lake in Parke County, Indiana. ( http:/ scott-ramblings.blogspot.com/2011/03/lake.html. The old Mansfield mill is one of the few unchanged structures. It has gotten a coat of paint, but otherwise, it remains as I remember it. A different angle showi...

Wednesday, August 31, 2011. The light is growing fainter and now a large dragon fly patrols the area near the top of my trees. I’ve yet to see it, but soon the brown bat will make its appearance. The mosquitoes are feasting on my ankles, so the bat is sure to have a good meal. Wednesday, August 17, 2011. Ruby Lee Hayden Fifer 1922-2010. The family on Easter morning (minus my oldest sister). Mom, me and my older brother who claimed I was an oops. Helping Mom into the car. Mom, always at home in the kitchen.

Ramblings: Drained

Saturday, November 3, 2012. I stepped out onto my deck this morning, bird feeders in hand, and was met with the cool, crisp air that is common on an early November morning. The sun was low on the horizon, and the woods were relatively quiet. The smell of wood smoke from a neighbor’s chimney floated on the ever so slight morning breeze. It is the sort of morning that transports me back to another time and place. As the mound shrank, and the brown and golden leaves were replaced with black, charred skeleto...
