Human-Animal Studies Cinema: April 2015

Sunday, April 12, 2015. The Sexual Politics of Burger King Chicken Fries. Burger King's 2015 series of commercials for the relaunch of chicken fries depends on powerful stereotypes about women, homosexuality, and race to market their product to privilege: straight, white, masculinity. In this commercial, a rooster is shown browsing a dating website. After snubbing a number of hens, he comes across BK Chicken Fries and suddenly becomes very excited. Healthy, living. Are doing in my house? His son replies,...

Human-Animal Studies Cinema: It's a Man's World for Talking Dogs
http://hascinema.blogspot.com/2015/08/its-mans-world-for-talking-dogs.html
Friday, August 14, 2015. It's a Man's World for Talking Dogs. Why is it that almost every voice-over for dogs in commercials for flea and tick medication, pet food, or treats is masculine? Feminine voices only seem to be consistently ascribed to Nonhuman Animals on television in dairy commercials featuring farmed cows. These voices are often matronly, as well, likely in an attempt to frame the product as something that is nurturing, healthful, and familial. Ms Wrenn is the founder of Vegan Feminist Netwo...

Human-Animal Studies Cinema: January 2015

Monday, January 12, 2015. Never Let Me Go" mirrors animal exploitation. Ultimately, "Never Let Me Go" is the story of a human couple reduced to the status of animals. It's a heartbreakingly sad film. But it's the exploitation that's sad, not the species of the victims. Posted by Margo DeMello. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A project of Animals and Society Institute. Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Revisiting 'Jurassic Park' in light of 'Blackfish'. With next summer's release of 'Jurassic World,' recently teased with a trailer starring Chris Pratt, I think it's worthwhile to revisit the original film in the paleontological franchise in light of the 2013 SeaWorld-documentary 'Blackfish,' with a focus on the inherent abuse captivity represents for wild animals and the potential dangers it creates for human handlers. Human-Animal Studies Cinema: Goldfish Enrichment and Wildlife Rehabilitation
http://hascinema.blogspot.com/2015/02/goldfish-enrichment-and-wildlife.html
Saturday, February 7, 2015. Goldfish Enrichment and Wildlife Rehabilitation. As a Virginia resident, I follow the "wildlife". In the video, we see a crude plastic pool imprisoning several fishes. It should go without saying, but the goldfish industry is one that imposes great amounts of suffering on fishes. And goldfishes are a highly sensitive animal who easily succumb to inferior habitats, water that has not been treated, and stressful conditions. I believe there are alternatives that can be explored&#...

Human-Animal Studies Cinema: December 2013

Monday, December 30, 2013. Dog Guards Dead Friend. As if we didn't have enough examples of the loyalty of dogs, this latest video, taken in China, shows a dog who spent a full day and night guarding the body of his dead companion who had been killed by a car in the middle of a busy road. This loyal friend only moved out of the road after someone finally moved the body of the dead dog from the highway and buried him or her in a park. The question is: what are we going to do with that knowledge? ASI's Huma...

Human-Animal Studies Cinema: February 2015

Friday, February 13, 2015. 35 Years Later, Infamous Flop Still Bad. But this unintentional representation of a historic phenomenon is not nearly enough to save "Heaven's Gate." Thirty-five years after its release, don't fall for the revisionist hype. Because it's still a bad movie — purely on artistic terms. Worse than that, the production involved willful torture of animals. Posted by Margo DeMello. Labels: American Humane Society. Saturday, February 7, 2015. Might be a problem in itself is never addres...
