have some decorum: November 2014

http://havesomedecorum.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sometimes ALS wins. Sometimes you just can’t fight it. Sometimes you let it win. However, there are no winners. Everyone loses. Century Russian daybed. :-) I was just sitting there looking out of my window at the trees and I could feel myself squirming. Squirming, squirming, squirming. I thought to myself, “Ellie, what are you doing? Because it’s too scary for the other person to handle. It’s too much! We’re not in fucking China! To listen to Grace Jones sing La Vie en Rose. Warning: Jenny… Do not read this blog. I received a ton of emails last night from readers asking me about my friend. Now, in life, you have friends and then you have friends. What other stuff do we have to talk about? Who will take care of Gracie like their own child? Who will nurture Gracie? Who will guide Gracie? Who will steer Gracie straight if she gets out of line? Who will make sure that Gracie will have a successful life and make the right choices? Who will hug her? Who will replace me? Best frien...

have some decorum: Summer Series: Le Lobster Bar

http://havesomedecorum.blogspot.com/2015/08/summer-series-le-lobster-bar.html

Summer Series: Le Lobster Bar. If you asked me what my favorite restaurant in the entire world is, my answer would be Mrs. Wilkie’s in Savannah, Georgia. More on that in a different blog.). So, I want to share with you a restaurant that fits perfectly into my Summer Series and happens to follow all of my criteria: aesthetically pleasing, charming, not quite the norm, with a menu that is worth leaving the comforts of my own home. Have you ever seen a better logo for a lobster shop? The banquette seating i...

Town and Country House: No, not just for some

http://www.townandcountryhouse.com/2011/02/no-not-just-for-some.html

No, not just for some. As I mentioned a day or so ago, I could write at least 100 more posts on Peru, but this will be my last for a while. If you are interested in more about this amazing country, then please click to read past posts about shopping. A good bit of our time this year was spent re-building humble houses in the slums of Chimbote, but we did some other things as well. The “powder room” of the second house we built. Note the shard of mirror and the comb. Our group was able to pay the bills of...

The Vivienne Files: Olive, Wine and Gold join A Common Wardrobe, warm tones for summer

http://www.theviviennefiles.com/2015/08/olive-wine-and-gold-join-common.html

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Olive, Wine and Gold join A Common Wardrobe, warm tones for summer. In honor of the season (in the Northern Hemisphere) of the ripening of all delicious things, I give you the "Tuscan inspired" wine, olives, and gold that was sent to me a few days ago. And yes, I did choose that bracelet because it reminded me of olive trees and grape vines. Earrings – Alexis Bittar. Tee – J. Crew. 8211; Janna Conner. Leather and metal bracelet – Brooks Brothers. 8211; Diane von Furstenberg.

Town and Country House: Cabin Fever

http://www.townandcountryhouse.com/2011/01/cabin-fever.html

Snowed in for three days—and counting. I have to hand it to the Mister, who planned ahead and started on his “snow day” project a few hours before the first flake fell. By late morning Monday, the Mister had all the strips cut and glued and tacked with small nails into place. Next came a coat of primer. While the primer was drying, there was plenty of time for sledding. Wednesday, I hung a painting and put the urns. And clock in place. Then, we lit the fire, and we were pretty happy. Mom on the Run.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then, add a tablespoon or so of olive oil to your skillet and tip the skillet to coat it well. Next, layer about two cups of fresh spinach, a cup of grape tomatoes, and a half cup of chopped red onion. Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork. The Mister and Little gave this two thumbs up, and cleaning up was easy-peasy. I'm looking forward to trying similar recipes from Molly Gilbert's cookbook Sheet Pan Suppers. My copy is on its way.

Town and Country House: Hold that Tiger! Graduation Day

http://www.townandcountryhouse.com/2015/05/hold-that-tiger-graduation-day.html

I searched the VRBO website for lakefront rentals near Clemson University, sleeping 12, and came up with this beautiful house on Lake Keowee. Although this view shows lots of steps down to the lake, the selling point was that the house had two master suites only one step up from the driveway. Part of the Cliffs Keowee Vineyard neighborhood, the house sits on a small cove with a stunning lake view. I took a page from the Boy Scout Handbook and decided I'd best Be Prepared! Five years of tailgating. Middle...

Town and Country House: May 2015

http://www.townandcountryhouse.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Stars and Stripes and Summertime. We had some April and May birthdays to celebrate with dear friends this past weekend, so I spent most of Saturday making the house look festive and ready for a summer of suppers on the deck, fun movie nights, and lazy weekend mornings (at least occasionally! I bought a big Costco bouquet of hydrangea and sunflowers, which I mixed with some ferns and sticks from the yard and some parade flags to create the arrangements on the mantel. I pulled out a few Americana-themed bo...

Town and Country House: February 2015

http://www.townandcountryhouse.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

The Best $20 I Spent this Month. I think we can all agree that $20 doesn't go very far. I'm especially reminded of this when grocery shopping. Remember the opening sequence. Of the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" when character Mary Richards picks up a package in the supermarket, glances at the price, rolls her eyes, and pitches it in the cart? That's me. Times 100. It's not all walking around the lake and tossing your beret in the air, is it, Mary? Orchids, also priced at $10, in clay pots. Orchids like bright ...

Town and Country House: Silver Shells, for a Few Clams

http://www.townandcountryhouse.com/2012/07/silver-shells-for-few-clams.html

Silver Shells, for a Few Clams. Every now and then, I get a little bit obsessed about some. Maybe I saw it on Pinterest. Or in a catalog. Or in a shop, or even in someone’s house. And so I begin to see if can find the object of my obsession. In this case, it was silver shells for the dining room. Where’s my credit card? The second click says. You do not need more stuff to dust and store. The third click, which comes quickly behind the second says. Enjoying my collection of shells throughout the house.

Town and Country House: June 2015

http://www.townandcountryhouse.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Oh, Charleston. Beautiful, historic Charleston. A city that restored herself after the unspeakable evils of slavery, after war, after earthquakes, after hurricanes. Charleston restored herself first for her own citizens and, then remarkably, for the world. She became an international destination for historians, for architecture and culture buffs, for scholars, for gardeners, for foodies, for lovers. I wrote about Charleston. As I scanned the news this morning, these AP images spoke to me of the hope that...

Have some Dessert
