Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. August 2014: 2 current eruption sites. Kilauea summit eruption in Halema’uma’u crater:. Eruption started in 2008. Lava lake size: approx. 520 ft (160 m) by 690 ft (210 m). Level of lava: approx. 75 to 600 ft below the crater floor. Liquid lava is out of sight, only volcanic fumes and a red glow is visible if conditions permit. Closest access: 1 to 2 miles (from Hawaii Volcano Observatory). Best views: during twilight in the morning or evening. Eruption started in 1983.
