Hayles Abbey Herald

Monday, 9 January 2017. A full gang was back on site today, after a 3 week absence with holidays, family, flu and bad weather intervening. By now a certain 'cabin fever' was setting in at home, so we were raring to go, despite a rather dire weather forecast for the day. He soon got to work on the side of the cutting, starting by reprofiling the top edge, which was very lumpy due to previous excavation material being deposited there. Eventually we noticed Dave D's predicament, and two of us hopped over th...

Hayles Abbey Herald: The first slabs go down

http://haylesabbeyhalt.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-first-slabs-go-down.html

Monday, 19 December 2016. The first slabs go down. A great day today (appart from the fog and drizzle) as we got some slabs down, for the first time. This was another milestone for the project, and it made us feel very motivated. To begin with, tea. Here is Paul, with two cups ready to go, and rather taken aback by Lucky the labrador, brought to us today by Mrs. Lucky. What are you snuffling in there, Lucky? Gerroutovit, you scoundrel! Here is the first slab being lifted. The placing has to be very gentl...

Hayles Abbey Herald: November 2016

http://haylesabbeyhalt.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html

Monday, 28 November 2016. A 'brilliant' 12 volunteers turned up on site today, to make up for the hours lost last week when we were completely rained out. The sun shone brilliantly, but there was no warmth to it, and a thin wind kept us on our toes, urging us to keep moving. Sitting outside (we are talking 28th November here) was just about do-able, if you had a hot cup of something between your hands. Paul was setting out the top row of corbelling on several bays. Here is Paul - again, he seems to get i...

Hayles Abbey Herald: August 2016

http://haylesabbeyhalt.blogspot.com/2016_08_01_archive.html

Monday, 22 August 2016. Welcome to the Hayles Abbey Herald. Welcome to the new Hayles Abbey Halt reconstruction blog! We've moved it to a separate site in order to make it easier to find, for those who didn't know it was hidden in the B&S blog. More and more people are taking an interest in it, so a quick access to what we are achieving is important for the outside world. What exactly is it that makes this job so popular? Is it the work? Is it the cameraderie? A sense of achievement perhaps? And Dave P a...

Hayles Abbey Herald: The first train also stops

http://haylesabbeyhalt.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-first-train-also-stops.html

Monday, 12 December 2016. The first train also stops. Well, you just can't believe everything you read on a blog, can you! It turns out that there was an even earlier train that stopped at the new halt - see below. There's always someone out there who knows better. Doughnuts were off the menu today, as not ready when Paul passd the shop, but he was nonethless armed with several chocolate Yule logs, which were an honourable substitute. Paul: 'Aren't you laying bricks today, Neal? Neal: 'Er, no.'. You can'...
