Falling on Deaf Ears

Falling on Deaf Ears. Thursday, March 1, 2012. Death is scary—that’s pretty much universal. There’s all sorts of reasons for being afraid of death e.g. fear of infiniteness, finiteness, meaninglessness, nothingness, the unknown, or of the cessation of being. Yet Socrates evidently marches toward his death without complaint, without fear, and doesn’t postpone his death for even a second despite his having multiple opportunities to do so. A Socrates-like acceptance of death is unusual in Western society.

Falling on Deaf Ears: Forever a student of life: the end is the beginning

http://hear-nothing-know-nothing.blogspot.com/2010/05/forever-student-of-life-end-is.html

Falling on Deaf Ears. Monday, May 10, 2010. Forever a student of life: the end is the beginning. Have no fear comrades, this isn't my last post. I'm going to get those extra credit points. But I'll continue on more so because I've become addicted to blogging when I should be doing other things. That being said, let's get to the meat of things. Or the veg of things. For vegetarians. I'd hate to alienate anyone. Fast forward four years and I found myself in a similar boat, trying to choose between my insti...

Falling on Deaf Ears: April 2010

Falling on Deaf Ears. Thursday, April 29, 2010. When it comes to religion, there is a system of punishments and rewards. Though there are many exceptions, the overall consensus among religious followers is that good followers get rewarded and the bad followers get punished. Aristotle appears to touch on this question when he writes"…is it completely wrong to track a person's fortunes like this? The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. That, dear readers and non-readers, is my question. Where is the courage?

Falling on Deaf Ears. Monday, March 29, 2010. Diving into Parmenides: What we have to learn from a constant state of being. 8220;…For the same thing is for thinking and being.”. As Parmenides shows us, the problem of mind-body dualism is by no means a new one. Parmenides often rejects sensory experience in favor of the reasoned mind as we can see when he tells us:. 8220;That which is there to be spoken and thought of must be. For it is possible for it to be,. But not possible for nothing to be.”. Or has ...

Falling on Deaf Ears. Monday, February 20, 2012. Why do we suffer, and to what end? 8220;Besides, Socrates, I do not think that what you are doing is just, to give up your life when you can save it, and to hasten your fate as your enemies would hasten it, and indeed have hastened it in their wish to destroy you” –Crito. Crito’s plea to Socrates is the epitome of the questions that surround suffering in death:. Better yet, why do we suffer at all? We know from the apology that not only is Socrates content...

Hear our voices!
