I had been visiting the Isle of Coll, in the inner Hebrides, for well over 30 years and recently moved to the island, having retired from my job as a college lecturer in art and design. Over the years, like most visitors, I have been captivated with the island's visual charms, the rugged landscape and the beautiful unspoiled beaches offering stunning, panoramic vistas of the surrounding Western Isles.

Willow. In using this tree for making baskets I am following a tradition of thousands of years of human history for creating containers from natural materials. Predating pottery, we have used willow because of its flexibility and strength. Another of the Hebridean baskets I make is the creel. A kind of willow rucksack this used to be made all around Scotland and also in a slightly different form in Ireland.
