Hegemonic Bulwark: Threats to Freedom of Speech at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville
http://hegemonicbulwark.blogspot.com/2014/03/threats-to-freedom-of-speech-at.html
You can't spell "Hegemonically" without "Monica.". Saturday, March 8, 2014. Threats to Freedom of Speech at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Actually, all Tennessee state schools. As Tennessee lawmakers have proposed a bill. Even as it lowers my opinion of the senator even further, if that was possible. It's fun to watch an actual scholar of the eighteenth century respond to wingnutty misuses of the words of Thomas Jefferson. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). CFP: Feminists Co-Opting Media.

You can't spell "Hegemonically" without "Monica.". Sunday, January 26, 2014. My Real Teaching Philosophy. I've now made it through my first MLA season on the job market- no interviews, alas, but I still have over twenty applications for jobs, fellowships, and postdocs outstanding. The uncertainty about the next year is difficult for me, but I'm trying to think of becoming comfortable with uncertainty. As a strategy for personal growth.* *. However, in all aspects of my life, I need to have a nemesis.

Bellatricksy: August 2012

Memory believes before knowing remembers. Sunday, August 26, 2012. Michael Kreyling- Inventing Southern Literature (1998). Despite the fact that I'm knee-deep in exam-writing (and full of hurricane anxiety), I'm still reading to finish up my lists. This book in particular is coming in quite handy. However, because I'm focusing on exam writing, this summary is not up to my usual standards of summaries- I just wanted primarily to get the significant quotes recorded. In his discussion of the Agrarians and t...

Memory believes before knowing remembers. Saturday, August 17, 2013. Lucy Furman- The Quare Women: A Story of the Kentucky Mountains (1923). It felt almost like cheating to read such a straight-ahead narrative as the novel from 1923. Part of the experience was simply the aesthetic experience of reading such a beautiful book:. It's scheduled to print in early October, and Amazon is now reporting that it will ship in November. I'm so excited! It's the first time I'll be in a book!

Memory believes before knowing remembers. Saturday, August 17, 2013. Helen Ellis- Eating the Cheshire Cat (2000). This novel was recommended by a lovely person I met at the Dickens Universe this summer, after she learned about my dissertation topic. I had to get it through Inter-Library Loan- though now that I've read it, I'm quite surprised that I haven't heard more about it. What a fantastic read! We roll our hair and we wear lip gloss” (66). Could she ever afford new glasses? Could she dress better?

Memory believes before knowing remembers. Wednesday, July 25, 2012. Monique Wittig- The Straight Mind and Other Essays (1992). In what Wittig characterizes as a materialist lesbian approach to heterosexuality, she “describe[s] heterosexuality not as an institution but as a political regime which rests on the submission and the appropriation of women,” a regime from which there is no escape (xiiv). Wittig’s example of such violence (in her 1980 essay) is that of pornography, an analysis which has be...

By Lisa Barr. Examine a blindfold. The integral strands of any fabric leaves myriad gaps. The warp: what corporate power edits from our consciousness. The woof: what government eliminates. In between are passageways through corporate/state ideology. A journalist's work travels these paths. And expands them. That is the hopeful part of Antonio Gramsci's media hegemony theory.
