New routine and new friends in the country | Helen in Hanoi
https://heleninhanoi.wordpress.com/2013/11/18/new-routine-and-new-friends-in-the-country
Helen's Leave for Change adventure at HTCC in Hanoi. New routine and new friends in the country. I think Vietnam is changing me. It appears that I am now a biker chick (well, if a 45-year-old woman with grown children can actually be a biker chick). Cruising in Ha Tay. At least we’re in a rural area and traffic is much lighter. But I was still pretty nervous. Tien hasn’t led me astray yet, so I trusted him. And he delivered on his promise to go slow. Did I mention I like Vietnam? Lunch here is a long aff...
The college connection | Helen in Hanoi

Helen's Leave for Change adventure at HTCC in Hanoi. My posts may make it sound like I’m doing a lot of touring, and since I’ve been filling my weekends with excursions, that’s understandable. But in between, I assure you work is getting done! This building houses Tien’s office, the auditorium and a meeting room we’ve been using. It’s where I spend most of my time on campus. It’s been quite a bit to squeeze into three weeks: two group presentations, a workshop and final report — and of course the r...

Helen's Leave for Change adventure at HTCC in Hanoi. Cooking and trekking in Sapa. Carter’s chicken with passion fruit. Ginger and chicken with passion fruit. My job in particular was the papaya salad and I’m pleased to report it was all highly edible. Of course we had professional help. On Saturday we had a lovely tour guide for a four-hour hike through the countryside, where rice fields dot the mountains. We v. And by that point we had no where to move to. Next post →. You don’t nap in Canada? | Helen in Hanoi
https://heleninhanoi.wordpress.com/2013/11/27/you-dont-nap-in-canada
Helen's Leave for Change adventure at HTCC in Hanoi. You don’t nap in Canada? Setting up working groups at today’s workshop. I was commenting to my interpreter today that in Canada we often eat our lunches too quickly. It’s not uncommon, I told him, for us to eat a sandwich or salad in 15 minutes and then spend the rest of our lunch hour running errands or just getting back to work. 8220;You mean you don’t nap? 8221; he asked in disbelief. Make no mistake, there is nothing “wine” about this s...I’v...
Business and personal | Helen in Hanoi

Helen's Leave for Change adventure at HTCC in Hanoi. I think I’m going in the wrong direction in terms of ironing out my sleep schedule. Yesterday I was awake at 4:30 am; this morning at 3:30 — puttering around my hotel room. The rooster wants me to keep it down. Had an excellent all-day meeting with a group of eight teachers involved with recruitment at the college. Only Tien and his boss spoke English, so there was lots of translating. Who does most of the housework? I wasn’t asked how much my jo...

December 3, 2012 – The time flu by. Posted by Greg Fergus. December 3, 2012. It is remarkable (weird? How the body works. On Saturday morning, I was feeling a little stiff but within normal parameters when Molly, Corey and I ran the Gatineau hills. I stayed for a respectable time at the party but not as long as I would have liked. Got home, popped some Advil, took a warm shower and flopped into bed for a fitful night of sleep. November 24, 2012 – On winter and the company I keep. Posted by Greg Fergus. November 24, 2012. For the next three months, if not for the next four, I expect that the temperatures for my runs in Canada will be sub-zero Celsius. Today is the first day. Kate, Molly and I ran the Gatineaus this morning. Kate is like a running deer on the uphills. She. On any incline she faces. Molly is a solid, long-distance runner who, like the Energizer bunny, keeps going and going. I fall somewhere in-between. Running an...

December 9, 2012 – Climate changes | Aylmer Runner

December 9, 2012 – Climate changes. Posted by Greg Fergus. December 9, 2012. A quick post. Here is incontrovertible proof of climate change… sort of. In Aylmer, there is hardly any snow on the ground. Just over the Gatineau hills, however, there is a few centimetres on the ground – and certainly more than five centimetres in the hills. Some entreprising person build a full snowman along the #1 trail last night, which in this photo, appears to be slightly taller than Molly! Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
November 17, 2012 – Downtown Toronto | Aylmer Runner

November 17, 2012 – Downtown Toronto. Posted by Greg Fergus. November 17, 2012. I am determined to make it to 100 days. That perseverance is perhaps the only way to explain why I have carved out some time to run although I’m the Queen City for only 12 hours. A five-hour train ride to Toronto to make it to a book launch by a friend, followed by an overnight return bus to Ottawa (ugh! Wherein my running buddy Matthew will pick me up to take me to the Gatineaus for our weekly run with the Aylmer Crazies.

November 18, 2012 – Surprise, surprise! Posted by Greg Fergus. November 18, 2012. As expected, I made it through this weekend with runs in Toronto and the Gatineau hills. However, how those runs came off was anything but predictable. Husband, stayed at our house about once a week on their days off a couple of years ago. Caroline was in Toronto on her way to a wedding. What were the chances that we would meet? Here are pictures of Caroline and me and her brother. I caught the 0h45 overnight bus to Ottawa ...

January 2, 2013 – The land of snow and cold. Posted by Greg Fergus. January 3, 2013. It has been a while since I blogged, but I wanted to let you know that I am still running. I have some photos from previous runs, which I will retroactively publish in the coming days. I could not ask for better winter running conditions…. Perhaps I can ask for less of breeze! July 18, 2013 – Summer heat and moving feet. Posted by Greg Fergus. July 18, 2013. Almost 200 days have elapsed since my last posting. I’ve been busy. However, on each of those days I managed to get out for at least an eight-kilometre run. Most weeks I break 70 km. Through severe frostbite to a pulled calf muscle, I can say that I kept my resolve to get out for my daily constitutional. 100 days to another year of running. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. December 8, 2012 – Happy Anniversary! | Aylmer Runner

December 8, 2012 – Happy Anniversary! Posted by Greg Fergus. December 8, 2012. Twenty-two years ago, my darling Julie said yes when I asked her to marry me. What a great run we’ve had! A lot of laughs and three delightful (and slightly crazy) kids. The secrets to great marriage: listen carefully and patiently, always assume the best in the other and be very quick and generous to give a loving or encouraging word (the corollary: be glacially slow when you are contemplating saying something in anger).

Helen in Hanoi | Helen's Leave for Change adventure at HTCC in Hanoi
Helen's Leave for Change adventure at HTCC in Hanoi. Wrapping up a change experience. As was easily predicted, my three-week Leave for Change placement in Hanoi went by too fast. On Friday I met folks from the WUSC office for a farewell lunch. My timing was fortunate as WUSC President Ravi Gupta was in town from Ottawa; it was a pleasure to meet him and discuss the work of WUSC through Uniterra more broadly. I also look forward to helping the college forge connections with strategic partners in Canada...

Week in India
Thursday, May 3, 2007. General Impressions of India. I’m writing this on the plane ride back home, after I had some time to process my brief but rich experience in India. Even though I didn’t fall in love with it as I did with parts of Latin America and East Africa, I can honestly say that it is a very rich culture, very different from most that I have experienced so far. Some aspects that stuck out to me:. Clothing: since I wore a salwar kamis (long tunic, loose pants, and scarf) several times, I can sa...
