Wednesday, 15 February 2012. Helensburgh and District Landcare Group’s involvement with Streamwatch. In 1997, Helensburgh and District Landcare Group committed to being involved in Streamwatch for three years. We selected four local creeks and we had eight volunteers. A team of two volunteers went out each weekend to test their nominated creek. This meant that each of the four creeks was tested monthly (with a few misses) for three years. Landcare members using the Streamwatch test kit.

ORIGIN: native to South America. HABIT: glabrous, herbaceous, perennial climber to 40m. HABITAT: fertile soils, disturbed areas, often planted along fences. IDENTIFYING FEATURES: thick, fleshy, alternate, heart shaped leaves. Stems produce aerial tubers. Numerous long flower sprays in Autumn, small, greenish, creamy-white flowers. FRUIT/SEED: usually does not produce seed in Australia, disperses by aerial tubers which fall to the ground. UNDERGROUND STRUCTURE: tap and fibrous roots, roots from tubers.

HABIT: rampant, herbacious, perennial climber. HABITAT: moist, sheltered places, invades coastal rainforest, headlands, bushland and roadsides. IDENTIFYING FEATURES: stems twining, bluish-purple flowers, arranged in clusters, leaves alternate with three to five lobes or heart shaped up to 13cm long.
