Helen's Round-the-World Travels: October 2011

http://www.helensroundtheworldtravels.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Monday, 31 October 2011. We take a public bus from Lijiang to Dali. Peggy and Katie having a beer. Bar street at night. City gate at night. Ingredients outside a restaurant. We arrive at the village which is very traditional and with no tourist development in the village itself, although tourist boats come and go from the jetty here. In the small square a few local people are selling produce of fish from the lake and vegetables. Stalls selling fish and vegetables. Tourist boats waiting for tourists.

Helen's Round-the-World Travels: May 2012

http://www.helensroundtheworldtravels.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, 31 May 2012. Onboard the Boat to the Mainland. As we near the harbour, several other small boats pass us on the way out and waves of greeting are exchanged. Nico and his House. A neighbour of Nico’s prepares lunch for me, brings it to his house and lays the meal lout on a cloth on the floor. I have cassava and taro leaves cooked in coconut milk, with tinned fish. Walk to a Waterfall. Nico and the Chief. I am almost at the end of my time on Fiji. When I arrived I had almost no idea about the...

Helen's Round-the-World Travels: Halifax

http://www.helensroundtheworldtravels.blogspot.com/2012/08/halifax.html

Friday, 31 August 2012. Lighthouse Hostel at Campbellton. Via Rail to Halifax. The city is somewhat of a hotchpotch of old and new buildings, but they seem to be making an effort to keep old building where they can, even if it is just the facades. Public Garden in Halifax. On a hill at the top of the city is the Citadel, which is the original fort, built in a star shape. From here they fire a noonday gun and a changing of the guard is enacted for the tourists. Changing the Guard at the Citadel.

Helen's Round-the-World Travels: Nova Scotia Coast

http://www.helensroundtheworldtravels.blogspot.com/2012/09/nova-scotia-coast.html

Sunday, 2 September 2012. Coast at Peggy's Cove. Lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. Me and Mirjam at Peggy's Cove. We the drive further along the coast to Mahone Bay, where we are staying overnight in a hostel. Here there are 3 churches built side-by-side; one Anglican, one Evangelical Lutheran and one for the United Church of Canada. I wonder if the church-going residents pick and choose which one to attend on any given Sunday? Three Churches at Mahone Bay. Farm on Second Peninsula. Leaving the town we take a ...

Helen's Round-the-World Travels: November 2011

http://www.helensroundtheworldtravels.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 29 November 2011. Holiday with Mum - Singapore. We arrive in Singapore by train from Kuala Lumpur. Singapore is an island, a country and a capital city. To be a single mother is taboo and teenage pregnancy is very rare. There is no social support from the government in these cases. Mum at the waterfront. This crazy building is the latest hotel to be built. It is on reclaimed land and appears to have a huge ship across the top of the 3 towers of the hotel. Marina Bay Sands Hotel. This evening is ...
