Hello, Northern Ireland....

Hello, Northern Ireland. Monday, April 13, 2009. Day 8 - Going Home. So far, I have neglected to do a lot of commentating on the trip to Northern Ireland. I wanted to get out all of the things we actually did before I forgot (seeing as there was no internet connection where we were). I will commentate now. When people ask me how my trip went, I don't know what to tell them. Do they want the 2-second, 2-minute, or 2-hour summary? Are they financially legitimate? Are they glorified vacations? For me, I did...

Hello, Northern Ireland....: Days 3 and 4

http://www.hellonireland.blogspot.com/2009/04/days-3-and-4.html

Hello, Northern Ireland. Monday, April 6, 2009. Days 3 and 4. Today is the big day of the week: the schedule is full. 7 AM: Wake up and shower at the public facilities at Waves. We walked across town and walked all the way back from our showers. For our walking, we did get a little surprise. The owner/manager/some guy decided to show us around the building. He showed us the workout gyms, pools, and hot tub/sauna that he said we could use later that week if we wanted to. We want to. Back downstairs, we pl...

Hello, Northern Ireland....: Day 1

http://www.hellonireland.blogspot.com/2009/04/day-1.html

Hello, Northern Ireland. Saturday, April 4, 2009. Friday, March 13:. Last night I stayed up quite late studying for my theology and world religion exams. I figured I'd be able to catch up on sleep in the van to the airport and on the plane. I neglected to remember that I am horrible at sleeping in vehicles and that we'd lose four hours due to time zone changes. The best thing about our flight was the sunrise. I have some pictures of it. Gorgeous and very surreal - pink and orange. I thought a...I don't t...

Hello, Northern Ireland....: Day 7

http://www.hellonireland.blogspot.com/2009/04/day-7.html

Hello, Northern Ireland. Monday, April 13, 2009. Our last full day in Northern Ireland. On the schedule, this day was called our "Day Off - sort of.". Our next stop was a two hour drive to Dunlap Castle, where we had a tour of a beautiful old castle on a cliff looking out toward Scotland. It was cool to hear about the history of the family feuds and all that, but it was even cooler just to explore the crevices and landscapes. One last night sleeping in the church. Hello, Northern Ireland....: Day 5

http://www.hellonireland.blogspot.com/2009/04/day-5.html

Hello, Northern Ireland. Saturday, April 11, 2009. The fifth day. Adequate amount of sleep. Steve drove us just after 7 AM down to WAVES where we did our routine. Today would be spent at Lurgan Jr. High. The junior high school was perhaps my favorite of all the schools we went to. Kids that age are so predictable. They ask you offensive questions and are entirely honest, and I love it. Preteen rebellion is so transparent. One kid asked, "Why do you think America is best? I gave him my email. That mig...

Hello, Northern Ireland....: Day 2

http://www.hellonireland.blogspot.com/2009/04/day-2.html

Hello, Northern Ireland. Saturday, April 4, 2009. I got ten hours of sleep! Closing the night was a game of keepaway football outside with the kids. The biggest thing I noticed today was the activity of a church's congregation. A few people do many things, always on the move, while many people simply show up for church once or sometimes twice a week. April 17, 2009 at 3:14 PM. I'm glad you're still Phil even in a fancy, sophisticated ballroom. Sounds like sports kids = good times! Day 8 - Going Home.

Hello, Uganda: September 2009

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 30. So Kevina says if I whistle at night, I am calling the ancestors to come visit me. This is a bad visit. The rest of the family members also confirmed this tradition. However, none of my ancestors visited me last night, so I know that this aspect of ATR is not entirely accurate. I've been reading more of the Qur'an again, so I am excited to give a presentation next week on East African missionary relations with Muslims. I don't know what kind of info I will find. After that I am g...

Hello, Uganda: African Bush Harp pt. II

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009/12/african-bush-harp-pt-ii.html

Thursday, December 3. African Bush Harp pt. II. Last night I was playing the adungu like always and I asked Suzan if she knew the English word for it, which is "African Bush Harp." Then Suzan asked why the term "bush" was included. I told her because it is a primitive instrument created by the mindless people of backward cultures. She laughed. Hello, Uganda: First Post from the US

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009/12/first-post-from-us.html

Thursday, December 17. First Post from the US. Man, I have a lot of days, events, and thoughts to document. I'll do with what I can remember. Here we go. Friday - the End. As I was browsing the photos, taking tea, and collecting the small payment I requested for the clothes, she exclaimed out loud, "Wow! Who am I that you would come to visit me? Suzan and I spent much of the remaining day together. Suzan cooked me delicious cassava fried with tomatoes. What a good cook, among other things! We arrived tha...

Hello, Uganda: August 2009

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 28. First Post from Uganda. Including time zone changes, we traveled more than an entire day to get to Uganda. On one plane, the flight attendant woke me up and called me Clint Eastwood, which made me pretty happy, because out of all things that have the potential to reverse my sexual orientation, I would have to say Clint Eastwood is number one (relax, I'm trying to be funny). Weather has been wonderful. Rain is light and occasional, not lasting too long (locals wish there was more du...

Hello, Uganda: Jet Lag

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009/12/jet-lag.html

Saturday, December 19. I got up around 6 AM this morning, which is good because I got to run into the various members of Jeremy's family as they are much earlier risers than teenagers who play music. The past few days have been slightly rough on my body. Two nights ago I only wanted to sleep for 3 hours. Jet Lag is still there. We have a performance in Lemoyne/Harrisburg on Tuesday. It's gonna be great, and the music these guys have created is amazing. I wouldn't trade it for another sound. I...Everythin...

Hello, Uganda: Braided Hair

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009/12/braided-hair.html

Wednesday, December 9. Yesterday they started to braid my hair. I sat on a mat from 8 AM to 3 PM and three people worked on it. They are about halfway done. Dreadlocks are much more painful, though these still aren't the most comfortable to sleep on. This morning was the last time we will see Papa, unless Dean or I return to the country. God willing we will return sometime. Today I am going back to the salon for them to (hopefully) finish my hair. It's weird not being able to wash hair when showering.

Hello, Uganda: I aced that jank

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009/12/i-aced-that-jank.html

Monday, December 7. I aced that jank. So I just had exams straight from 9 AM to 3 PM. Not fun on the wrist. Lots of objective, short answer, matching, and then of course four essays total with many points and sub-points to be made. First was Old Testament from 9-12. Easier than I thought. I studied a decent amount. Wrote essays about the Decalogue's purpose today and modern lessons from Hosea. So here's the outline for the coming week:. Friday - no plan. Probably hang out with Suzan for the last day.

Hello, Uganda: November 2009

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 30. Second-to-last Weekend at Home. Today was kind of low-key. First I woke up and finished my Pluralism paper for ATR class, knocking out all duties for two of my five classes. Next, I washed clothes outside. Then I played adungu for a little. We played the peace core next, who were very tall and last years champions. We slaughtered them 10-5 or something like that. Then we were tired and barely lost our next game. That night I was very sore. Suzan, Dean, and I were all exhausted. So in...

Hello, Uganda: Last Visit Home

http://philinuganda.blogspot.com/2009/12/last-visit-home.html

Saturday, December 5. The ride out of Muyenga was bumpy and my headache that had been minor throughout the day was increasing. When we reached the giant taxi park, I was hot and uncomfortable because the legs of my boxers kept getting twisted and creeping up my leg. How annoying. December 7, 2009 at 3:00 PM. Eternal Sunshine

Tuesday, October 14, 2014.
