Mystery Writing Notes: June 2008

http://herbertholeman.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, June 7, 2008. Words that writers should avoid where possible. Harvey Stanbrough edited my novel, Switcheroo. And during that process I read his book on. His advice is to avoid using state-of-being verbs whenever you can. They do not show action and do not engage the reader. There are only a handful:. Here is a list of other weak words. And with clear instructions. I'm passing this on to my writing critique group. Many thanks for your helpful blog! Mystery Author and Grant Writer. July 23, 2008 at 9:22 AM. Mystery Writing Notes: Writing Rules

http://herbertholeman.blogspot.com/2008/07/writing-rules.html

Wednesday, July 2, 2008. Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing. These are rules I've picked up along the way to help me remain invisible when I'm writing a book, to help me show rather than tell what's taking place in the story. If you have a facility for language and imagery and the sound of your voice pleases you, invisibility is not what you are after, and you can skip the rules. Still, you might look them over. 1 Never open a book with weather. 3 Never use a verb other than ' said' to carry dialogue.

Researching The Hound of the Baskervilles -- by Herbert Holeman, Ph.D

Herb Holeman, Ph.D. The Hound of the Baskervilles. A Question of Authorship. The Hound of the Baskervilles. May be the most famous of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Yet lingering doubt remains over Conan Doyle's authorial contribution to it. My own work in progress grows out this question and this blog post is what I've learned about this real-life mystery. The tale of a supernatural hound who threatens the descendants of a noble English family. Or, did he coauthor it with Bertram Fletcher Robinson? In it,...
