Growing Up In Geylang: Little Giant Me

http://growing-up-in-geylang.blogspot.com/2012/08/little-giant-me.html

Growing Up In Geylang. Wednesday, August 22, 2012. There's a zinc roof that covered our 'cellar' in Geylang. Well, it's not exactly a cellar but a common landing where our three-storey high back spiral staircase ended. This staircase was our fire escape and led to a back alley downstairs. Its landing had a door to keep unwanted visitors out. They reminded me more of tiny prehistoric plants than the tall swaying kampong variety. From a distance, they looked positively toy-like. There's a 'World Cities' ex...

Growing Up In Geylang: Eating Out in the 60s/70s

http://growing-up-in-geylang.blogspot.com/2012/08/eating-out-in-60s70s.html

Growing Up In Geylang. Thursday, August 23, 2012. Eating Out in the 60s/70s. In this blog, I have written about food my Cantonese mom had dished up while I was growing up in Geylang. There were times when she preferred not to cook and we would then tapow from kopitiam zhichars and street hawkers. I was often the errand-boy as I liked to cycle. It beats walking from lorong to lorong. I could also take shortcuts through the many backlanes linking them. Along Sims Avenue would come this chwee kueh seller wi...

Good morning yesterday. You wake up, and time has slipped away. And suddenly it's hard to find, the memories you left behind. Remember. Do you remember? Paul Anka, Times of Your Life. Friday, February 27, 2015. Return to Batu Maung. On the trip back, we decided to take the ferry instead of the Penang Bridge even though the latter was faster. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the beautiful sunset which I saw in December 1970, and which I blogged about here. 27 February, 2015. 27 February, 2015. An old fr...

Good Morning Yesterday: Memories in a Tin Cup

Good morning yesterday. You wake up, and time has slipped away. And suddenly it's hard to find, the memories you left behind. Remember. Do you remember? Paul Anka, Times of Your Life. Sunday, August 20, 2006. Memories in a Tin Cup. Recently I had the pleasure of attending the book launch of The History of Changi. Well, it didn't take long before I discovered that army trainees have a huge capacity for liquid and that the mug actually wasn't excessively big at all. On a more serious note, I find that many...

Good morning yesterday. You wake up, and time has slipped away. And suddenly it's hard to find, the memories you left behind. Remember. Do you remember? Paul Anka, Times of Your Life. Thursday, October 31, 2013. Where have all the bowling alleys gone? You may find this hard to believe. The very first time I tossed a bowling ball, I got a strike. You will find it even harder to believe if I told you where I achieved that feat. It was at a bowling alley named,. Do you know where that was? I think this was ...

Good Morning Yesterday: Remembering Lee Kuan Yew

http://goodmorningyesterday.blogspot.com/2015/03/remembering-lee-kuan-yew.html

Good morning yesterday. You wake up, and time has slipped away. And suddenly it's hard to find, the memories you left behind. Remember. Do you remember? Paul Anka, Times of Your Life. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Remembering Lee Kuan Yew. Tomorrow I plan to do something I rarely do - I am going to join thousands of Singaporeans in bidding farewell to our first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew at the Parliament House. The one quality that I admire most about Lee Kuan Yew is “perspicacity”. 25 March, 2015. Brian ...

Growing Up In Geylang: Lao Fu Zi

http://growing-up-in-geylang.blogspot.com/2012/08/lao-fu-zhi.html

Growing Up In Geylang. Wednesday, August 22, 2012. This comic strip has become such a mainstay in our cultural consciousness that I sometimes wonder why not more fun activities are organised around it. We should have a 'Lao Fu Zi Skit Challenge Day' or see more of him in our Chingay parades. Mr Wong's humour was not poor by comparison either. They reflected universal themes of pathos, irony, courage, romance, and even reverse logic, why I guess his humor is still relevant today! All very '60s and '70s!

Heritage Sings

Do you love to hear or sing the great hymns of the past, but can't find any church that still offers hymns as part of their worship? We are a group of Christian believers in the Tri-Valley area in California (Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, Danville) who come together periodically to sing the great hymns in a traditional setting, to pray, to read the Bible, and to fellowship with other believers. The hymnals we use are the "Celebration Hymnal". What can you do? Follow us on Facebook at Heritage Sings.
