June 03, 2015. This blog was once known for its steady stream of gratuitous animal pictures, a practice that has largely fallen by the wayside. To partially remedy that situation, allow me to introduce the latest piece of exercise equipment to be added to our menageria, a rescued boxer pup named Bo. The good thing about such a name is the almost infinite variations. Some of my favorites are Botox, Bolo, Bogusziti, Beauregard, Beau Gest, Bodhidharma (not very often), Bogo, Bogomil, etc. June 01, 2015.

July 17, 2015. How to speak hillbilly. Sorry about the slow posts lately. You can blame most of those on the recent storms that hit WV and KY hard and took out our phone and internet as they blew through. Anyhow, here's the latest Front Porch podcast from WV Public Broadcasting. This time it's a fun one, with the topic being Appalachian accents. With some lessons on the same delivered by yours truly. Remember: pen and pin sound exactly the same and don't drop your Rs! July 13, 2015. The target of the mom...

August 06, 2015. The most recent ruling class hissy fit over the president's Clean Power Plan is pretty much like the last several, only more so. Ken Ward summed up the reactions pretty well at Coal Tattoo. It's all sad and complicated, but I keep coming back to the thought that catastrophic climate change is likely to make all our other problems look pretty small. Speaking of hissy fits, despite the one by legislative leaders over prevailing wage. August 04, 2015. In case you were wondering. Even better...

April 16, 2015. A little good news from Congress (no, really). It doesn't happen very often but the US Congress recently acted in a bipartisan way and did something that made sense. The US Senate overwhelming passed the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, which among other things extends funding for the popular Children's Health Insurance Program through 2017. There were concerns that this program would have withered away. So, yeah, it's not all bad. Labels: Childrens Health Insurance Program.

June 13, 2015. The latest Front Porch podcast is about whether or not to drug test welfare recipients. Labels: drug testing for public assistance. June 11, 2015. In case you missed it, this op-ed of mine appeared in today's Gazette. In the course of human events, to coin a phrase, people have tried to use remedies that did more harm than good. Over and over. His caregivers applied a standard remedy of the time: bloodletting. When the first attempts didn’t seem to help, they did it over and over...Sometim...

July 22, 2015. An all too rare win for workers. An increase of 70 percent above the state minimum of $8.75. I didn't see that coming. At best, I thought the $15 campaign might lead to a smaller state increase. But then what do I know? All I can say to that line of thinking is "we'll take that chance.". Labels: $15 per hour. July 21, 2015. I'll take all the good news I can get these days. Here are two items that fit the bill. The first is an AP article about Medicaid expansion in West Virginia. I think th...

May 30, 2015. Here's the latest edition of The Front Porch podcast by way of WV Public Broadcasting. This week we talked about West Virginia's heroin/opioid/prescription drug problem and some possible solutions. May 28, 2015. How's this for randomness: a court decides that Alpha Natural Resources needs to pay for former Massey CEO Don Blankenship's legal fees. Then there's this: WV coal production has been projected to drop by nearly 40 percent over the next 20 years. Labels: Alpha Natural Resources.

May 15, 2015. If it's the end of the week. That means it's time for the latest Front Porch podcast. By way of West Virginia Public Broadcasting. This time around we have a special guest and the topic is about how hard it can be for WV to attract and retain young adults, with digressions into the water crisis, the environment, etc. Labels: The Front Porch. May 14, 2015. Although on a fairly small scale. I also found it interesting that WV's new senator,. May 13, 2015. I guess learning from the past isn't ...

June 26, 2015. I guess there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in some circles today in light of the US Supreme Court's ruling on marriage equality. I tend to be of the opinion that those who are opposed to same sex marriage could maybe just not marry someone of the same sex. I think that would take care of it. Meanwhile, I found the reaction of some WV politicians. Labels: Affordable Care Act. June 25, 2015. Long time, no post. Of course, I kept my cell in airplane mode to keep from racking up huge ...
