Final Completed Georeferences for HerpNET - September 2008, color-coded by institution. HerpNET Final Report Highlights. These data are being returned to the participating museums. We georeferenced 69% of the total number of unique localities for all institutions and 44% of the original number of cataloged records. Thus, although we received but 50% of requested funding from NSF, we completed georeferencing of almost 70% of all localities. The HerpNET project began in 2003 with 36 institutions. Curre...

Northwest Nature Notes: LONG-HORNED BEETLES
http://slatermuseum.blogspot.com/2015/04/long-horned-beetles.html
The blog of the Slater Museum of Natural History. Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Beetles are the most diverse animals in the world, with surely over a million species, although only about 350,000 have been described to date. Any collection of tropical insects contains undescribed species, and beetles often make up a good part of this, even though they have been favorites with collectors ever since specimens were first collected for museums. The eggs of Plectrodera. Are laid in the fall, and the larvae bore int...

The blog of the Slater Museum of Natural History. Tuesday, March 3, 2015. A WHITE BLACK BIRD. I look at a lot of birds every year, and I don’t see many that are as cool as this one, a leucistic Black Turnstone ( Arenaria melanocephala. This striking bird is wintering at the end of Sandy Point, north of Bellingham, Washington, in a flock of its relatives, and I finally got around to checking it out in February. I found the flock feeding on rocks at the mouth of the marina there. The bird is definitely leu...

Raffles Museum Internship: May 2007
http://rafflesmuseuminternship.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
Diving behind the scenes with the crew at Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research. Wednesday, 30 May 2007. 6 flower crabs and a homosapien. After the TV crew left, there was cleaning up to be done in the preservation room. The remaining crabs had to be preserved as well for exhibition purposes as instructed by Siva. Times like these, I really miss Danliang. When Kelvin got back, he told me never to force the syringe if it got stuck. That was probably another reason why alcohol was flying everywhere.
