Hertford is the counties governing town, and is where the councils main offices are located. The history of Hertford dates back a long way, and the castle in the town is one of the main landmarks from this history. Hertford started it's life as a small town which often was the victim of invasions from Danes who sailed their boats up the river Lea from the Thames in London. Old buildings in Hertford include the worlds oldest quaker house, which was founded in 1669 and has been kept in use ever since.
