For every 20 Euros received as Support, one VER is retired permanently. (Smaller amounts will be aggregated.). Every 5 Euros received is equivalent to 1 month of cleaner cooking. VERs are a very cool metric for measuring successful stove distribution, user-training and on-going maintenance because of the Gold Standard* auditing system. Cookstoves promoted by Hestian are hand made using local materials, fostering local ingenuity and self-reliance. Implementation is sub-contracted to locally owned businesses and social enterprises (many seeded by Hestian) resulting in skills diversification and job creation. As of 2015, Hestian projects employ over 2,000 people (mostly women in rural areas) to manufacture and promote smoke reducing cookstoves in Africa.

Reducing the emission of greenhouse gas is good for our climate. As responsible global citizens we should reduce emissions as much as possible. For those emissions that we cannot reduce we can purchase carbon offsets elsewhere. What does Hestian do? Hestian stoves reduce greenhouse gas. Emissions because they burn much less wood. VER sounds like techno-babble and it is. But it’s also a clever way of measuring reductions in greenhouse gas. It’s a very important measurement for all of us and for our planet.
