Ratios and Final Drives. Hewland Engineering and Series News. Mike Hewland - 1922 - 2012. Mike Hewland died peacefully at home on Saturday aged 89. He was a truly gifted, unique and caring individual. His contribution to International Motorsport is legendary; he was widely regarded as the father of motor racing transmissions. Mike was once described as a classic example of what a man can achieve from scratch with determination, application and sheer hard work. He will be sorely missed by many.
