Living in the city of Pasadena affords us the opportunity to travel to many great destinations all within an hour of our front door: Ultralight backpacking the San Gabriel Mountains, scuba diving the Pacific Ocean, and trekking the High Sierra, as well as the Mojave and Colorado deserts. I have a beautiful, adventurous wife, a cool teenage son and thrill-seeking trail dog named Andy.

Short Stories of City and Outdoor Travels. Saturday, November 1, 2008. In May of 1987, a small group of us drove out to Death Valley. One of our stops was Ubehebe Crater. Ubehebe is about 2,400 feet in diameter and 500 feet deep. The hot wind blows across the east rim, then down inside and funnels through.
