Most of the rest are mine unless otherwise noted. The substation at Bement is being used by the highway department, I guess. The main line made a 90-degree bend around this building. See this picture. The Bondville substation is in good condition. The Transportation building next door is decorated with these snazz...
Hicks Car Works: Variety Show
https://hickscarworks.blogspot.com/2015/08/variety-show.html
News and views of progress at the Illinois Railway Museum. Thursday, August 6, 2015. We have lots of variety to display from the last two days. There's no easy way to organize all this activity, so here goes:. The side sill needed a second coat of blue. The lighting in the barn isn't very good for this application, so I wound up doing most of it with a brush in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Much better! And look, one of the numbers still needs black outlining. The grid box castings are now black.

https://hickscarworks.blogspot.com/2012/05/daves-depots-chicago-alton-shirleyfunks.html
News and views of progress at the Illinois Railway Museum. Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Dave's Depots - Chicago and Alton - Shirley/Funks Grove, IL. Which is located nearby. The depot is in nice shape, and is apparently used for storage. Two of my great uncles on the Wilkins side of my family moved to Shirley, IL from Kentucky during the Great Depression. In fact, I have numerous cousins that live in this area. Posted by David Wilkins. May 8, 2012 at 1:56 PM. Sure, Tom, your contributions are always welcome!

CTA O Scale L Layout: The zombie slowly rises ... or, the 4000 is back in paint
http://ctalayout.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-zombie-slowly-rises-or-4000-is-back.html
CTA O Scale L Layout. Thursday, April 23, 2015. The zombie slowly rises . or, the 4000 is back in paint. Not a lot of progress, but one coat of "test" paint has been applied to the previously smashed Q-Car 4000 series body. The Q-Car plushie (sans trucks) matches up well with the 3D printed Baldie. There are some minor differences, but the two car types were not identical. I am leaning towards painting my entire 4000 series the green and cream paint scheme as I just think its a nicer color than the brown...
CTA O Scale L Layout: Updates for June 2015
http://ctalayout.blogspot.com/2015/06/updates-for-june-2015.html
CTA O Scale L Layout. Monday, June 22, 2015. Updates for June 2015. Due to continuing to work on home improvement projects, along with an emergency hot water heater replacement, not a lot of progress has been made on the layout lately. Work on the 3D printed Cincinnati Car Co. 4000 series "Baldie" continues, with some light weathering being added and window glazing finally being installed (this car has to be the slowest build ever). A one car Ravenswood shuttle at the Southport station. A close up view.
The Dunsel Line: March in Review
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2015/03/march-in-review.html
Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Let’s get straight to the point; I spent a lot. Of money this month. Even though I’d planned on spending a good deal of money on models this month, my actual total greatly exceeds my anticipation (and this doesn’t even cover routine things like food and bills). I had a number of other projects (not model related) that also cost more than expected, so April will almost certainly be a very quiet month around here. I probably won’t begin this phase of that project in April. After th...
CTA O Scale L Layout: Track expansion is finally completed!
http://ctalayout.blogspot.com/2015/05/track-expansion-is-finally-completed.html
CTA O Scale L Layout. Monday, May 11, 2015. Track expansion is finally completed! The new section of structure has had its track added and has been wired! The station still needs to be built and some minor details added, but trains can now run over the new structure! A view down the tracks. The station, which will be an island type of platform, will. Go in the space in between the tracks. I have also completed an update video for May 2015:. Hmmm that's an odd assortment of options of travel! HO scale Tra...

The Third Rail Cookbook and Trolley Wire Times: All things elevated and the odd man out
http://thirdrailcookbook.blogspot.com/2013/03/all-things-elevated-and-odd-man-out.html
The Third Rail Cookbook and Trolley Wire Times. Blog about streetcars, interurbans and rapid transit in real life and model form. Wednesday, March 13, 2013. All things elevated and the odd man out. Greetings again from the muddy banks of the Fox River. The fun with 4000s continues. One of the headlight "halos" is in place, and here are the making of some grab irons out of .020 brass. AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. The package with it has headlights, marker lamps and assorted other goodies...

CTA O Scale L Layout: Attempting to arise from the ashes ... or a zombie 4000 Plushie is hopefully reborn.
http://ctalayout.blogspot.com/2015/04/attempting-to-arise-from-ashes-or.html
CTA O Scale L Layout. Monday, April 6, 2015. Attempting to arise from the ashes . or a zombie 4000 Plushie is hopefully reborn. First off, I was able to obtain two new additions to the elevated fleet:. I was able to obtain a Q-Car Northwestern 280 motor and a 4000 series Plushie, both with Wagner power trucks. The Northwestern motor will be paired with the Northwestern trailer that I have while the Plushie will go into a 2 car all-Plushie train. Evidence of the broken windows seen on the end. Using some ...
CTA O Scale L Layout: Almost ready for the paint shop
http://ctalayout.blogspot.com/2015/03/almost-ready-for-paint-shop.html
CTA O Scale L Layout. Sunday, March 22, 2015. Almost ready for the paint shop. I started working on the Balide model again, and have finished the roof vents over the doors and re-applied the door drip guards:. Now that this is done, its pretty much ready to be sent off to the paint shop. And as luck has it, the weather has finally started warming up so may be able to paint in the garage soon! This particular car will be painted in the more modern CTA green and cream paint scheme. Its currently sitting on...
CTA O Scale L Layout: January 2015
http://ctalayout.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
CTA O Scale L Layout. Saturday, January 10, 2015. Urban Renewl . Part 4. Work continues . although now at a slower pace . on the new commercial block. The sides have been cut and added to the front:. The side walls will have no windows. Once wall will face the L station, so definitely no windows there. The other will have some advertisements, so no need either. Don't be skimpy with interior bracing. I've found that you really can't over-brace. Use all the scraps from the window cut outs:. Quality: I've y...
CTA O Scale L Layout: December 2014
http://ctalayout.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
CTA O Scale L Layout. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Merry Christmas to all! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years to all! And from last year:. Saturday, December 20, 2014. One important part of having a layout is not being afraid of change. Sothe urban renewal department has decided that a change to my block of stores along Sheridan Road is in order. The department decided, in their wisdom, to put up a new building that will no longer block the view of the TV from the workbench! A couple of issues:.

Hicks Car Works
News and views of progress at the Illinois Railway Museum. Monday, March 26, 2018. A day of streetcars. I didn't have a particular project in mind for Sunday, but there was plenty going on when I showed up so I ended up helping out on a few different things. As luck would have it, they all had to do with streetcars in our collection. Not that there's anything wrong with streetcars! However Pullman built them to last back in 1908 and it's scheduled to be out carrying the crowds for the Thomas event in Jul...
