As well as several other works, illegitimacy is a key element in each of these novels. Sabatini and his family in Italy. Since Rafael's parents were still performing when Rafael was an infant, they likely decided that the itinerant life of an opera singer was ill suited to a child. They sent him to Anna's parents in England to a small village outside Liverpool.
