High Heels and High Chairs: June 2013
http://highheelsandhighchairs.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, June 22, 2013. I have a confession to make. Today, I am shopping for flats. Actually, shopping for flats isn't itself an inherently shocking thing for me. After all, what do you think I wear to the playground, grocery store, play date, school function? But today, I am shopping for flats to wear to work. Specifically, an out of town work event. It's time for a new pair. For me, looking the part helps drive the inner confidence. Maybe it's vanity, maybe it's a distraction tactic to get me thr...
High Heels and High Chairs: January 2014
http://highheelsandhighchairs.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 8, 2014. January 1 dawns on us all as another new year. The opportunity to start fresh, to mend those not so healthy/productive/soul-filling ways. We clink the glasses, we sip the bubbly, we smooch our sweethearts and find ourselves filled with the excitement and possibility of a new year. I don't need to be seduced by what could be better when things are actually pretty damn good. The story will only continue. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Mama Needs a New Pair of Shoes. High Heels and High Chairs: September 2013
http://highheelsandhighchairs.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 29, 2013. There are things we do as parents for our children that they will never fully appreciate simply because, to them, they just happen. Things like clothes, food, a treat in their lunch box. One day, they may grasp the fact that there are a number of people in this world who don't have that type of security, but I'm happy to let them save that lesson for later. Then, as the Braves left the field with a 12-5 win, we traipsed our way around and around and around until we found the e...
High Heels and High Chairs: Tipping the Scales
http://highheelsandhighchairs.blogspot.com/2014/05/tipping-scales.html
Thursday, May 1, 2014. After nearly three extremely fun, often stressful, always rewarding years of walking the proverbial work/motherhood tightrope, I find myself in need of a new circus. On Monday, I was let go from my consulting position in favor of a big time agency. The good news? Understanding why the big time firm is the right move for the company doesn't make the reality of my not being there to participate in this exciting time feel any better. Do you gel with their personality? So, I'm going to...

Apparently, I’m in a gang. | Surviving Summer
https://survivingsummer.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/apparently-im-in-a-gang
105 days with a 4-year-old followed by 70 days with a 5-year-old a year later – what to do? Oh, The Places We’ll Go! Apparently, I’m in a gang. August 20, 2009. We went to Village Park in Kannapolis, and I’m only sorry we hadn’t checked it out sooner. It has a little train, a *huge* playground, shaded picnic tables (although a bit fly-infested) and a really nice splash pad. It also has one of my favorite things, a big empty field. Sidewalk chalk, anyone? Using gang hand signs. It starts with baby signs, ...

Don't Underestimate..: Don't Underestimate the Importance of a Birthday to a 4 Year Old
http://dontunderestimate.blogspot.com/2009/05/dont-underestimate-importance-of.html
Wednesday, May 13, 2009. Don't Underestimate the Importance of a Birthday to a 4 Year Old. The kid turned 4 last week. It was all planned out - there was going to be a birthday party here on Saturday, we had invited all his friends from school and playgroup, there would be balloons, party hats and Mickey Mouse cupcakes for the kids (beer, wine and margaritas for the adults) - good times, right? Me: We can't have your birthday party tomorrow. Kid: What do you mean? Now looking a bit panicked). This went o...

Don't Underestimate..: Don't underestimate those piano lessons
http://dontunderestimate.blogspot.com/2009/03/dont-underestimate-those-piano-lessons.html
Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Don't underestimate those piano lessons. I know many of you groan at the thought of those childhood piano lessons that were forced upon you. I know many of you think "I wish I could play piano". And I know many of you from both camps who now send their kids (forced or not). Fast forward to today, and I can still play a little, but for the last 4 years I think it's been pretty limited to Disney tunes and nursery rhymes. Monday, June 8, 2009. Don't underestimate giving it a shot. For those of you who follow our summer adventures at www.survivingsummer.com. You know about my friend L and the play she was in that we (6 moms in a mini-van) went to see. Here's the thing about L. SHE *does* stuff. I mean, we all *do* stuff, the blah blah mundane of our everyday lives, but L does the other things, the things we all say we would but never do. And now I hear stories of 35 mile bike rides and running with two four-year- olds.

Don't Underestimate..: Don't underestimate Superman
http://dontunderestimate.blogspot.com/2009/05/dont-underestimate-superman.html
Monday, May 25, 2009. Ice cream, that is. When we were visiting St. Augustine, FL earlier this year, we discovered Superman Ice Cream in a little parlor on St George St. The kid fell in love, and I'm pretty sure he ate it every day after that. This particular Superman Ice Cream was Red, Blue and Yellow - lovely colors that make you think twice about what you're eating, but really just Vanilla ice cream. So he cheerfully said that it was OK, he would just stick to Chocolate until we went back to get the g...

Don't Underestimate..: Don't underestimate your dog (or your vet)
http://dontunderestimate.blogspot.com/2009/03/dont-underestimate-your-dog-or-your-vet.html
Tuesday, March 24, 2009. Don't underestimate your dog (or your vet). She never had the chance to meet the kid, though, because I was 3 months pregnant when she died. She had been diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. A form of bone cancer. It was in her front leg, and unfortunately, due to her age and arthritis, she was not viable for the only treatment, amputation. In the end, Maxie made the decision for us, and passed away peacefully on her own. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). High Heels and High Chairs.

Don't Underestimate..: Don't underestimate what you say.
http://dontunderestimate.blogspot.com/2009/01/dont-underestimate-what-you-say.html
Tuesday, January 27, 2009. Don't underestimate what you say. Way, way (way) back in my "previous" life, I waited tables. In that life, I saw LOTS of people every day. And most of them said *something*, and for most, I don't really remember what. But there are three things that have stuck with me through all the years:. You're savvy." I don't know that I actually *am* savvy, but a couple who owned another restaurant in the same town, one day thought I was. Not sure why, but it makes me happy. High Heels a...

Thursday, June 23, 2011. On Father’s Day, it was a boy’s day for Daryl and Blake. They first went to practice their swing at the driving range, then continued onto a railroad museum and took a train ride. Happy Father’s Day Daryl, you are such a wonderful daddy who works so hard for all of us. We love you very much! Happy Father's Day Daddy, love you. Wednesday, June 8, 2011. sophisticated simplicity
Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication."- leonardo da vinci. Thursday, August 21, 2014. Around this time of year, when i see everyone else getting ready for school, i really start to feel like 1) i'm old, and 2) i wish i was in school, too. School is the best! This longing probably just means that i need to be in a school setting in some way. what is fall without school? Not as fun, that's what. Thursday, April 24, 2014. High Heels and High Chairs | Less Balance, More Presence
High Heels and High Chairs. Less Balance, More Presence. August 14, 2015. August 14, 2015. 8220;I just love the way you’ve embraced your fears about doing this…”. These are the words my husband imparted to me during a conversation about where I am in my writing process (editing, mired in the busy work of agent research and query letters, preparing for the inevitable letting go). I laughed. Because embracing my fears? Putting myself out there. Doing it scared. Doing it scared. But doing it. August 5, 2015.
