High Salvington Windmill - History

The earliest known picture of The Mill c. 1883. The oak post on which the mill rotates is 21ft 6in (6.6m) high. The foot of the post is actually several inches clear of the ground, the colossal weight of the mill being taken through the diagonal quarter-bars and on to the horizontal cross-trees of the trestle. An early advertisement for Mill Teas. The original style of roundhouse, known from old photographs, was reinstated in 1990 and the mill restarted grinding on 4th April 1991.

The Mill prior to the restoration. High Salvington Windmill had worked for nearly 150 years when it closed in 1897. In 1907/8 the old timber roundhouse was replaced with a concrete construction - used as a tea room well into the 1950's. Worthing Borough Council purchased the mill in 1959 and Edwin Hole, Millwrights, undertook restoration works in the early 1960's. The Mill complete with steel frame. The new 10' brake wheel. A new 10ft (3m) diameter brake wheel was built as an exact replica of the old one...
