Growing up with a single mom - High Variance
http://highvariance.net/blog/2015/06/21/single-mom
Growing Up With a Single Mom. A good friend who is a single mom recently published an article about the angst she feels on Father’s Day. She wonders aloud what her son might or might not be missing out on by growing up with only a mom in the house. I think there are a lot of misconceptions out there, and wanted to share my personal experience as an only (and male) child of a single mom. Posted by Doug McKee. Laquo; In praise of dentists. In praise of dentists - High Variance
http://highvariance.net/blog/2015/06/03/in-praise-of-dentists
In Praise of Dentists. Is my dentist in New Haven, and he’s the best dentist I’ve ever had. He takes pride in every aspect of his work, his office is spotless, and his staff are top notch. I know he treats them well because he’s had no turnover in the six years I’ve been seeing him. And of course, his actual dentistry is excellent. Said he could fit us in as his last appointment that day. We rushed right over. Posted by Doug McKee. Laquo; La La Love Me Like You Do. Growing up with a single mom ».

La La Love Me Like You Do - High Variance
http://highvariance.net/blog/2015/05/25/la-la-love-me
La La Love Me Like You Do. When this song first hit pop radio, I hated it. It’s unoriginal, it drones on and on, and my kids love it so I can’t change the radio station when it comes on. The worst part is that it’s from 50 Shades of Grey. And makes me think of that creepy guy doing bad things to the girl whenever I hear it. On the other hand, it is catchy, and I do like the trashy Euro-disco stylings of Ellie Goulding. I’ve recently found one more reason to appreciate the song. Posted by Doug McKee.

Taking Up the Reins of a Successful Class. This spring one of the best teachers in our department, Steve Berry. Won the Lex Hixon ’63 Prize for Teaching Excellence in the Social Sciences. The only problem is that Steve can’t teach the course every semester. In fact, with the way teaching loads and sabbaticals work at Yale, we need a rotation of three instructors for this class where two teach it in any given year. Chris Udry. Stepped in last semester for the first time and it went very well. Penny active...

Where you go to see what I see. Admitting That I’m a Minimalist. January 29, 2017. I have recently begun to downsize fairly significantly, but I never wanted to consider myself a minimalist. My dad’s memorial service was last Saturday. Here’s what I had to say:. Thank you all for coming today to remember and honor James Russell McKee III. For most of his last thirty years, my dad was a devout atheist and socialist. Most of the time he was rational and compassionate. He read widely until it was just too hard to read, but he kept up on the news with MSNBC right up to the end. In 2007 he wrote a letter to the editor of the Bergen Record. Here’s one paragraph:. Work hard, but not too hard. I thi...
