Just another WordPress.com site. Day Two: New Orleans and Environs →. April 3, 2011. Passing the time at LAX. We were lucky to avoid being on one of the many canceled Southwest flights, though we did experience some fallout from the difficulties. Minor delays and an unscheduled plane change in Houston were no big deal, and now we’re at our hotel in Metairie, LA. Tomorrow morning we head to Vacherie to visit the Laura Plantation. We started the day driving north on 61 to Indianola, MS, site of the wonderful new BB King Museum. After a look at the building that housed the cotton gin where King once worked, we watched a short film about his life. Watching the BB King movie. The museum included an amazing selection of artifacts from King’s early life in the Delta and later international stardom.

Our day began with a drive on highway 61 to the Laura Plantation, a sugar cane plantation in Vacherie (about an hour outside of New Orleans). The main house at the Laura Plantation. Highway 61 Road Trip. Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Before heading to the GDBA at the court house square in Rolling Fork, we first stopped at the informal reunion of the class of ’61 organized mainly by Kay Heller and Eddie Touchberry at Sgt. Miller’s hunting camp just outside town. The fishermen in the class provided the fried fish. The rest of the tables were filled with French fries, onion rings, beans, salad, lots of yummy desserts and let’s not forget sweet tea. The deep fried tamales were to die for.
