Miami and Erie Canal Towpath Trail - State Route 66 Junction. A view of the portion of the hiking trails where 66A crosses State Route 66 north of Kossuth. The canal opened markets for Ohio goods. The most lucrative year of the canal was in 1851, operating roughly 400 canal boats with revenues of $350,000. Passenger fees were 2 to 3 cents per mile. Freight was 2 cents per ton, going down to 1.5 cents on trips over 100 miles. Boats traveled at 4 to 5 miles per hour.

Miami and Erie Canal Six Mile Creek Aqueduct

Miami and Erie Canal Six Mile Creek Aqueduct. Six Mile Creek aqueduct is one of the highlights of the canal. It was designed to drain to maintain the water level of the Miami and Eric Canal by allowing excess water to flow over its spillway down into Six Mile Creek below. A stone bridge for the towpath parallels each side of the aqueduct which was build in 1903 and updated 100 years later. A pedestrian bridge now allows visitors to cross the canal. A vehicle pull-off drive is just north of the creek.

Hiking the Ohio Buckeye Trails at Lock 17. Remnants of Lock 17 N are 300 to 400 feet north of the SR 66 - SR 81 intersection on the west side of the Miami and Erie Canal. The canal continues to be of greater depth and steeper grade than other area locks. Picture below is an iron anchor that held various wooden sections of the canal locks in place. This device is the most noticeable remaining remnant of the various wooden locks.

An aqueduct allows a creek to go under the Miami and Erie Canal and towpath at the northeast corner of the Municipal Park just west of Route 66 and north of W.
