Thoughts and analysis of hiking related issues (Training, nutrition, caloric expenditure, GPS, etc.). Calculate Personalized Calories Burned. Monday, September 27, 2010. VO2 Max Test - Useful for training but does not predict performance. I recently did another VO2 max test in USCs Kinesiology lab to help some new instructors get acquainted with setup and and watch how a test goes. Heres the blurb I wrote in the description:. Thoughts and analysis of hiking related issues (Training, nutrition, caloric expenditure, GPS, etc.). Calculate Personalized Calories Burned. Sunday, August 29, 2010. Why moving a little too fast can cost you a lot, especially at altitude. Ever head out trying to follow someones blistering pace, only to finally slow down and feel depleted? When you hike (or run, bike, etc.), you are using multiple energy pathways. The rate of energy production from each of these pathways is different. Links to this post.

Thoughts and analysis of hiking related issues (Training, nutrition, caloric expenditure, GPS, etc.). Calculate Personalized Calories Burned. Saturday, December 11, 2010. Salt and Cramp Tips. This is a post from nutritionist Ellen Coleman that was made in this post. And she allowed me to repost it here. Although the amount of salt in sweat varies, most people lose about 800 mg for every two pounds (one quart) of sweat. Some people are salty sweaters and lose much more, regardless of their fitness lev...
Hiking Science: Editing GPX Files

Many GPS devices come with their own mapping / editing software that may or may not be sufficient for your own analysis. Personally, I use Matlab for much of my processing b/c I have a lot of control, but you'll also have to do a bit of programming. The easiest way is to download the free GPX Editor. RightBrainWorld: A Blog for the Untapped Undercurrent of Creative People - Everywhere: Silicon Valley Group Combines Hiking with Brainstorming
https://rightbrainworld.blogspot.com/2014/09/what-is-hikestorming-idea-started.html
RightBrainWorld: A Blog for the Untapped Undercurrent of Creative People - Everywhere. Thursday, September 25, 2014. Silicon Valley Group Combines Hiking with Brainstorming. The idea started sometime in 2012. There were two groups that were both popular at the time (in Sacramento. where I was living at the time). One was. Sowhy not combine the two? Simple concept: Hiking Brainstorming = HikeStorming. There is no doubt that groups of people already go out on hikes, runs or bike rides to work on ideas....

What Would Ed Do?: In The Canyon
http://whatwoulded.blogspot.com/2013/01/in-canyon.html
Sunday, January 13, 2013. A friend emailed last week to ask if I wanted to join her on a lengthy hike in Topanga State Park, and it was a no brainer—I hadn’t seen her in eons, I hadn’t been to Topanga SP in eons, and I still hadn’t visited her new home in the canyon. But I’ll get there, I will. Sometimes hiking is about perspiration, and sometimes it’s about inspiration. On this particular sunny, cool January morning, it was both. What Would Ed Do?: January 2011
http://whatwoulded.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 11, 2011. Mt Zion Loop aka "Escape From Kelp Mountain". Having knocked off some 14- and 16-milers in the past, coupled with the relatively low-elevation profile of the trek (Chantry Flat rests at 2200'; Mt. Wilson at 5710', with lots o' miles between the two), we knew we'd come out with sore quads.but even then, we had NO IDEA WHAT LAY AHEAD. If you're not one of the masochistic few who've put in the grunt work on this special route, let me describe the first half of the trek:. Shower, r...

Monday, September 6, 2010. Mt Whitney aka "Hallelujah! No more numbers, no more statistics. During last week's Mt. Whitney adventure, I realized that for me, hiking is not about calculations or measurements or stopwatches, mileage accumulated, altitude gained - it's about truly living in the moment. And what a moment! And then we hit the road. The familiar sawtooth ridge was unmistakable. I can't believe we're really here. Hungry mama bears loitering around the campground we'd be staying at that evening&...
What Would Ed Do?: The Cadman Spur
http://whatwoulded.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-cadman-spur.html
Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Today I took the path less traveled…which also happened to be the path of more. Resistance (but the good kind). The trail sloped down through the greenery out of sight, and the San Gabriels rose on the horizon, silhouetted in the morning haze. I could see my originally intended path weave along the hillside below, now looking pretty boring next to my spectacular muddy green perch. Not too shabby, Griffith Park. Not too shabby. I smiled a big, sweaty smile, and found myself on ...
What Would Ed Do?: March 2011
http://whatwoulded.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 14, 2011. Conan's Corridor aka "Heart Attack Rock". I gots the desert fevah. A little over a month ago, I drove out to Jumbo Rocks Campground in Joshua Tree National Park for a short weekend with The Hike Guy. Kolby Kirk, and a few of his friends (including photographer Matthew Laine Nall. Arriving back at our campsite, the wind was a-rippin', so we huddled around the picnic table, refueled, and hopped across the road to set off for Conan's Corridor. Scrambling up and around giant bould...

Friday, July 9, 2010. Backpacking Preparations aka "Procrastination". This photo is unrelated to this post; I just know that people like to look at photos when they read blogs. I took this in Olympic National Park almost four years ago. Enjoy.). I just returned home from an angst-ridden viewing of what may only be described as an epic, timeless love tale for the ages - Eclipse. Aka the third Twilight. Oh yes, packing. . As I am still mulling the lessons learned from the Yosemite backpacking trip two wee...

Sunday, April 17, 2011. Dairy Queen Wall aka "Um, so the approach is the crux, right? I do not know this guy, but he did a lovely job. And only my second time climbing outdoors in my entire life (the first time happened, I don't know, thirteen or five billion years ago). About half a minute into the scramble, I stopped and said to Laura, "Um, is THIS the climbing? Knowing full well that this was exactly why the "approach shoe" was created. What Would Ed Do? Hiking San Diego | Finding some breathing space in a city of 3 million
Finding some breathing space in a city of 3 million. They’re on the Move. June 19, 2011 in Mission Trails. The snakes are on the move at Mission Trails. On June 15, I saw a large red diamondback rattlesnake crossing the Father Junipero Serra Trail; today (June 19), a garter snake slithered across the trail in front of me. The sun is out, the weather is warm but not too hot…it’s snake season. Keep your eyes open when you hike. May 23, 2011 in Hiking Tips. Tags: "oak canyon trail". In San Diego County from...

A Walk in the Woods
A Walk in the Woods. Tuesday, May 25, 2010. I think this may be one of the hardest hikes I have ever done. It should be, because it is rated as the most strenuous hike in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness. If you survive the climbing on this trail, you will be rewarded with many beautiful views. There is a lot of history surrounding Hospital Rock. During the Civil War, wounded and deserting soldiers hid out under the rock overhang being held up by Leah in the picture. Thursday, May 20, 2010. Optimal Hiking Grade - A 50 Hike GPS Analysis. Do you care about optimal hiking grade? Maybe not, but its interesting for us to think about. Intuitively, some may think that steeper trails should get you up higher more quickly because less energy is being put into the horizontal miles that a less steep trail would need. Copper Creek (Rancho La Costa Preserve). The Copper Creek section of the Rancho La Costa Preserve was once the site of several copper mines. While the mines were shut down and blasted shut almost 100 years ago, there are still a number of interesting remnants from mining operations in the area. There is also a small waterfall along the creek. Continue reading. This Week in San Diego Hiking – March 26, 2018. Photo: Canyon Oak and Desert View Loop Hello Hikers! March 26, 2018.
