Easter Island | Round the World

How we went round the world. Andrew and Wendy on Easter Island, the horizon stretching away for at least 2,000 miles. The highlight of our trip was the penultimate stop, our visit to Easter Island, lying far out in the Pacific Ocean, 2000 miles away from the nearest mainland in Chile. There are two major sites to see on the island. There is the Quarry,. Where over 300 statues still remain, some of them still being carved, but others are complete and waiting to be transported. And then there is Orongo.

How we went round the world. The Quarry is one of the major sights on the Island, and the only one, together with the birdman sanctuary for which a charge is made for entrance. The quarry seen at a distance, with the statues scattered over the hillside. This is the outside edge of the volcano — the crater is over the other side and will be seen in the photos below. How we went round the world. Thor Heyerdahl’s camping place, with beach, statues, and palm trees! And then suddenly, the Moai are visible on the other side of the beach. It was here that the great explorer Thor Heyerdahl made his camp when he came to investigate the island in 1955. Thor Heyerdahl was undoubtedly the greatest explorer and publicist of the island, even though his belief that that the island was originally populated by people from South America is plainly wrong. How we went round the world. The Marae of Mo’orea. For the last day on Moorea we rented a car – hugely expensive – and drove round the island. First however I wanted to do some archaeology, so we took the only road that leads into the centre of the island, to the Belvedere, to see a group of the so-called Marae. How we went round the world. Our main stay in Tahiti was not in Tahiti itself, but on the neighbouring island of Mo’orea, half an hour’s ferry journey from Tahiti.
