Hillary's Brook: Leanne Shapton: Swimming Studies
http://hillarysbrook.blogspot.com/2012/07/leanne-shapton-swimming-studies.html
Friday, July 27, 2012. Leanne Shapton: Swimming Studies. Yesterday my friend brought my attention to the recently released book, Swimming Studies. Seriously the moments, colors, textures she's captured! How wonderful to discover these with the Olympics about to start. I was already feeling nostalgic about my years as a competitive swimmer and so so so looking forward to watching the events. I'm coming out of my skin in anticipation for the Men's 400 IM. Read more about this author and artist here. In the...

Sunday, October 14, 2012. Love this time of year. Labels: Attempts at Gardening. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I like to look at things and make things. I thought it might be interesting to share some of them. I also thought this would be an easy way to keep track of the things I find so I can find them again. We'll see how it goes. Hillary's Brook: Balena.
http://hillarysbrook.blogspot.com/2013/01/balena.html
Wednesday, January 30, 2013. My Dinner Club went to Balena. Last week. I absolutely love this space*, so I was glad I got there early for a good look around and a drink while I waited for people to arrive. For starters, I have to say the specialty cocktails. Of course I had studied the menu. So basically, I'd go back for sure. But I'd like to sit at the bar for drinks, pizza and dessert ( dessert coffee! Our table was under the window (and kitchen! On the right in the top image. View my complete profile.
Hillary's Brook: So this happened. (Not really).
http://hillarysbrook.blogspot.com/2013/01/so-this-happened-not-really.html
Saturday, January 26, 2013. So this happened. (Not really). It was summer. Hot and sweaty and sunny. Girls were wearing sundresses and boys with tan backs were riding dirt bikes shirtless. The sunlight was so bright and thick you could see the yellow rays, and every color on the street was a richly saturated version of itself. Nicole is married and I found it odd she cohabited with about a dozen college students – I was back to my adult-aged self – but I also thought it was so cool. Anywa...It was massiv...
Hillary's Brook: Finding Vivian Maier.
http://hillarysbrook.blogspot.com/2014/04/finding-vivian-maier.html
Friday, April 25, 2014. Last week I had the opportunity to go see the documentary film, Finding Vivian Maier. About a street photographer who spent the majority of her life in and around Chicago. And artwork are unique because she was virtually unknown until a box of her negatives was purchased, after her death, by Chicago resident John Maloof for a book-writing project. Not quite suited for his needs, they were set aside until he eventually began scanning the negatives and created a blog. Without wantin...

hikerrev: Some Thoughts on Ferguson
http://hikerrev.blogspot.com/2014/11/some-thoughts-on-ferguson.html
Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Some Thoughts on Ferguson. The decision announced last night to not indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Mr. Michael Brown is no longer only about this one incident, if it ever even was. This incident has become, and is, about the state of race relations in this country that so many of us love. I move through every day assuming that I'll be safe, that I'll be able to get what I need at almost a...

Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Friday, December 6, 2013. The Hunger Games - some additional brief thoughts. Last week I was compelled to post something about the recent * *. Movie by the teenagers who were making lots of noise in our tv room. The next morning, the teenagers who stayed over the night are raiding our kitchen for breakfast, I was compelled to think about the bigger-picture issues that are brought up in the. hikerrev: Belonging
http://hikerrev.blogspot.com/2014/07/belonging.html
Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Monday, July 7, 2014. The other day, the day after I arrived back at my home after a mont-long journey, I went to work out at the (amazing, fantastic, unbelivable) gym where I'm a member. I walked in to the gym, into a large group of people, into a surprising welcome. I felt like the mere fact that I had returned and was going to work out again was celebrated - I felt like I had arrived at a place where I belong. What's the difference bet...
hikerrev: Lent, Week Five
http://hikerrev.blogspot.com/2014/04/lent-week-five.html
Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Lent, Week Five. During this season of Lent, I'm writing reflections based on the psalm assigned for each Sunday by the Revised Common Lectionary (look it up, if you want), and sharing those with the congregation I serve when we gather for Evening Prayer on Wednesday evenings. This reflection is from April 9, week five, and is based on Psalm 130. You ever sing the blues? Ever play the blues? Down in the dumps.

Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Tuesday, November 26, 2013. The Hunger Games - some brief thoughts. I just went with my family to see the new Hunger Games. Movie (I read the book. A couple times). I was impressed by the storytelling, by the acting (especially for an action-type film), and by how closely the filmmakers were able to stick to the heart of the story as written in the books. Trilogy also explores the complexities of human interpersonal relationships as we se...

Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Friday, August 30, 2013. Athletic Competition and Cooperation. I had a conversation with a friend a long time ago, when I was in college. We were young, we were idealistic, and we were exploring the places where our philosophical positions synced up (or didn't) with real life. The conversation I recall revolved around sport – particularly around the competitive component of athletic endeavors. The trouble, though, is that very few people ...

Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Wednesday, July 2, 2014. Royalty: an internationally-connected, and often wealthy, group of people who stewards a nation and provides for the large-scale needs of all of the people. Peasantry: a locally-connected, and often not wealthy, group of people who steawards the local land and landscape, and who provide for the small-scale needs of all of the people. I would have loved some kind of compare-and-contrast presentation - maybe a look ...

Trying to pay attention to what's going on in the world around me. Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Lenten Midweek Reflection on Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16. I do my best to dwell in the care of my God. To take shelter in the shadow of the almighty. From the spiritual desert sun. I do everything I can to take refuge in the Lord. And to allow the most high to abide with me. When eventide falls, and every other time of day as well. And yet, I don't feel borne up. I don't see evidence of angels standing guard. If you t...
