Food - Green living with Hillbraith

We are trying to be as self-sufficient in food as we can. We have a flock of Buff Orpington hens who provide us with eggs and a large vegetable garden which provides us with a lot of green food in the summer. We preserve as much of this produce as possible for winter consumption. Our meat comes from a local community supported agriculture scheme, which provides 10 pounds of meat each month from June to November. The animals are raised in our county, on pasture.

In 2008 we had a series of solar panels installed on the barn behind our house. This array provides around 12.5 megawatt hours of electricity over the course of a year. We sell this power to our local electricity supplier. All our appliances use electricity: we don't use natural gas for cooking or heating.

In 2008 we installed a geothermal cooling and heating system. This uses the difference in temperature between our house and the earth beneath our feet to keep us warm in winter and cool in summer. Because winters here in Canada are cold, we also use wood from the trees on our property to fuel a woodburning stove. So far, we have only had to use trees which have already fallen down.

We bought a hybrid car to cut down on emissions. Where we'd always had two cars in the past, we made a conscious decision to get by with just one. Most of the time this works fine, although it can be problematic in the case of breakdowns or two people needing to be in different places at the same time! When we have to, we hire a car to get round particularly thorny problems of that nature.
