Things I meant do well this year | Math is a shovel
https://hillby.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/things-i-meant-do-well-this-year
Math is a shovel. Trying to show how useful math can be. Things I meant do well this year. 8230; but I didn’t. I have explanations, but no excuses. It was my first year in a new school, new culture and new curriculum. I had to give “transfer tasks” which were really just glorified projects with really crappy rubrics. Science Fair. Let me say that again: Mandatory Science Fair. 3 Discussion prompts. I’ve actually created an assignment (as a way to bring up horrible midterm exam grades) where the...8216;s ...
Culturalization(?) & Meaning | Math is a shovel

Math is a shovel. Trying to show how useful math can be. I’m not even sure if that’s a word. Just checked, it is. I’m noticing something big about my students as I’m grading quizzes on Momentum. Something about using conservation of momentum is making it clear which students are memorizing formulas vs. understanding the basic idea of conservation. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. The importance of clear goals | Math is a shovel

Math is a shovel. Trying to show how useful math can be. The importance of clear goals. I have a very clear goal when I’m teaching any class: I want every student to learn the most they possibly can while they are physically present in my class. That seems obvious, but being able to state this has made almost every behavioral situation much easier to address. 8220;We can’t chat about social drama? This entry was posted in Uncategorized. June | 2013 | Math is a shovel
https://hillby.wordpress.com/2013/06
Math is a shovel. Trying to show how useful math can be. Monthly Archives: June 2013. Constant Velocity & Forces. This is just a quick post to get down my thoughts, but I’d love to get some feedback. So I tried to teach with a blend of the physic by inquiry and modeling instruction that I understand. It worked okay, but there were a few things that didn’t go super smoothly. One of those was definitely getting stuck in the kinematics doldrums. Make a train with the following sections: Constant Velocity ca...

Graduate school, glaciers, bike racing, environmentalism, feminism, music, knitting, and other things. Tuesday, January 18, 2011. I have gone over to the snow-side, officially. I purchased my first set of cross country skis (classical/touring; none of that skate-nonsense for me). Despite the weather being above freezing w/ rain/sleet, I went out to Hyak Sno-Park. Graduate school, glaciers, bike racing, environmentalism, feminism, music, knitting, and other things. Thursday, June 2, 2011. Okay, just in case anyone who has read this blog in the past hasn't caught on, but I've pretty much switched to Tumblr only. I like the format a lot better, as I can make super quick posts just about music or memes easier. I can also still do longer posts, and I don't feel as guilty because I have a lot of filler. Here I am: rachellovesrocks.tumblr.com/. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Bikes and Ice: February 2011
http://bikesandice.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Graduate school, glaciers, bike racing, environmentalism, feminism, music, knitting, and other things. Sunday, February 13, 2011. As of a couple hours ago, I have now officially applied to post-docs in. Austin (two different post-docs, in fact). I also tossed my CV in the ring to a couple national labs. If I don't hear from other places, I'm probably going to help write a proposal to get funding at a non-government/university lab in Berkeley, which would be tremendously awesome. The radical rational…. In search of innovative ideas with a well-balanced approach for the math classroom. Wait Time and Wait Time II. January 27, 2012. Stronger questioning techniques has always been an area of needed growth – I have improved through the years – but in order to be my best – it requires me to be very intentional. I understood the idea behind wait time – but when I read A Student’s Perspective. 8220;teachers tend to leave no more than one second of silence before addressing an unanswered ...
