Friday, December 24, 2010. Christmas Eve at La Lomita. Storm clouds rolled in and made for dramatic skies today. Rain fall total was .70-inch. Thursday, December 23, 2010. I saw more birds today than I have since we've been back at the ranch! No photos. Maybe tomorrow.) Some familiar faces:. Chipping Sparrow ( Spizella passerina. Field Sparrow ( Spizella pusilla. http://lalomitaranch.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 18, 2011. Yesterday's forecast called for rain. No rainfall despite the storm clouds overhead. Possibility of rain today and tomorrow. Keeping our fingers crossed. The poor deer are skinny this year due to the drought. Monday, September 12, 2011. The drought is bringing out birds and animals we have never seen at the ranch! Sunday, September 11, 2011. According to my resources at Wildbirds Unlimited this is a female or juvenile Baltimore Oriole. (A first for me! Thus the name Baltimore ...

La Lomita: Fox
http://lalomitaranch.blogspot.com/2011/09/fox.html
Monday, September 12, 2011. The drought is bringing out birds and animals we have never seen at the ranch! The Common Gray Fox is found throughout Texas. They are primarily active at twilight and at night, but they are sometimes seen foraging by day in brush, thick foliage, or timber. I guess if the poor little guys are hungry enough they'll come out in the open in broad daylight. I found this fox chewing on some bones in the barnyard. September 13, 2011 at 8:43 PM. He is a handsome dude!

La Lomita: We're back!
http://lalomitaranch.blogspot.com/2011/09/were-back.html
Wednesday, September 7, 2011. Happy to be back at La Lomita for our third stay. The big news:. My, oh my. it's really dry! I knew the creek would be low but I wasn't expecting it to be bone dry. Instead of standing on the bank and feeding the catfish as we normally would do, we walked along the middle of the dry creek bed. It was surreal. According to the USGS we have had no significant rainfall since September 2010 and the drought is predicted to last through the fall of 2012. Visit my other photo blog.

La Lomita: September 2009
http://lalomitaranch.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Eastern Phoebe and Lark Sparrow. The Eastern Phoebe, Sayornis phoebe. Is a member of the Flycatcher (Tyrannidae) family. I began seeing this bird a couple of months ago but I couldn't get a close enough look to identify it. This one in particular is likely an immature. Eastern Phoebe because of his yellow belly and noticeably faint wingbars. You can see his tail bobbing up and down in this series of photos). A Lark Sparrow ( Chondestes grammacus. The Lark Sparrow is declini...

La Lomita: October 2009
http://lalomitaranch.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 31, 2009. This is the American Snout (Libytheana carinenta). Butterfly. Hundreds of them flew over the ranch throughout the day. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get a photo. This is the only one. While he may not be the most beautiful, this little butterfly has an interesting story. Its population explosion and subsequent migration is a direct result of the drought-ending rains we have been experiencing. Click the photo to see a larger version). I couldn't believe it when I saw th...
