Tack rooms seem to fill up quickly! As a consequence, we are about to complete the construction of a second, adjacent to the stables in the barn. The one which appears in the pictures above is equipped with a sink, water heater, shelving, saddle racks and enough space - just - for all of the equestrian clutter which our clients have accumulated over many years of diligent attention to their horses.

Hillcroft - and its parent farm at Horsecroft - have a long association with horses. These are a few of the pictures from the family album which demonstrate their significance in the history of the farm.

Ten stables are situated in the barn and the adjoining blockwork shed. Each is approximately 14'x 14', providing roomy accommodation for even the largest horses. With high roof spaces, both buildings are airy and easily ventilated by means of the Yorkshire boarding, which can be seen in the pictures above. Fluorescent tubes provide direct lighting over each of the stables, allowing close inspections and stable cleaning to be carried out at any time and in any season.

The paddocks are constructed with 5" treated timber round posts and concrete based straining posts at specific corners. 3 strands of high tensile plain wire form the perimeter of paddocked area and this is topped with 20 ml high visibility electrified tape suspended on extended insulators. The electric fencer itself is housed in a locked workshop in the yard and power to the circuit can be controlled by a series of crocodile clips around the enclosures.

Hillcroft Farm Stables was developed to replace the old piggery which was demolished during the winter of 2008/9. For many years, farming at Hillcroft had consisted of mixed arable cropping, originally with breeding sows kept as an outdoor herd as part of a regular rotation. Today, arable farming still takes place at Hillcroft, although it bears little resemblance to the practices of the days when small mixed farms could sustain a whole family.
