hippo by the sea: japanese love

http://hippobythesea.blogspot.com/2011/08/japanese-love.html

Hippo by the sea. This was a blog on what I saw through my Japanese eyes in America. Now it's a blog on what I see in Japan through my slightly Americanized Japanese eyes. Sunday, August 21, 2011. Last month, on my mom's birthday, I posted the following as my Facebook status:. Happy Birthday, Mom, once the biggest enemy but always the biggest support and inspiration. I love you. Uh-huh," she said. Yeah, I just thought it would be only fair to share it with you because it's to you.". True, a part of me st...

Hippo by the sea. This was a blog on what I saw through my Japanese eyes in America. Now it's a blog on what I see in Japan through my slightly Americanized Japanese eyes. Tuesday, August 30, 2011. The lady at the store. She looked a bit surprised, but then the smile returned and she said, "Oh, really? Where did you work? Up the hill. You know, you go straight by the bakery and make a left at the temple, then up the long stairs.". Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about.". Oh, I see.". Japanese, born a...

Hippo by the sea. This was a blog on what I saw through my Japanese eyes in America. Now it's a blog on what I see in Japan through my slightly Americanized Japanese eyes. Thursday, May 5, 2011. Since a few months after I started living in San Francisco, on every Thursday, I would wait for a column to be up on one of my favorite websites, The Rumpus. The column is written by a woman named Sugar. The most terrible and beautiful and interesting things happen in a life. For some of you, those things hav...

hippo by the sea: January 2011

http://hippobythesea.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Hippo by the sea. This was a blog on what I saw through my Japanese eyes in America. Now it's a blog on what I see in Japan through my slightly Americanized Japanese eyes. Friday, January 28, 2011. Visiting is one thing, living is another. I've visited Japan several times for the past years, but all that time I lived. With your own culture, it's different. You know it all too well, and you expect it to be the same. And then it presents itself as quite unfamiliar. I feel Japan is cheating on me. One of my...

kimi kobashi: guess who?

http://kimikobashi.blogspot.com/2012/12/guess-who.html

Finding inspiration in the everyday. I designed two posters recently. Each one represents a different artist/designer. I think they're pretty obvious, but would you like to guess who? Here's the first one:. Not too hard, hm? Several giveaways in that image. Here's the second one:. OK, so he's actually an architect but they're designers too. What other artists would be fun to interpret in poster form? I recognized the first one is Frida Kahlo very soon. By the way, your new blog layout is nice. Have a goo...

kimi kobashi: spirograph for saint valentine

http://kimikobashi.blogspot.com/2014/02/spirograph-for-saint-valentine.html

Finding inspiration in the everyday. Spirograph for saint valentine. I realize that in other parts of the world, Valentine's Day is only celebrated with your romantic partner, but where I work (at a K-8th grade school in California), the day is taken more in the spirit of: Hooray! Cards, Candy and Trinkets for All! They don't always work out quite right. Every once in a while the pen slips. But overall, the patterns are really beautiful and fascinating. You can also change pen color and new designs can b...

kimi kobashi: mineral pigments

http://kimikobashi.blogspot.com/2013/04/mineral-pigments.html

Finding inspiration in the everyday. Here's a fuchsite mineral with a wash of the watercolor made from it. This one is rhodonite - mineral and watercolor. Rhodonite makes a good color to paint something like these roses, perhaps. (Slipping in another garden pic here! I enjoyed finding the paint that matched the mineral sample, but it wasn't easy to do since there were tubes scattered everywhere. I really thought the gems were beautiful and interesting since they weren't cut or polished.

kimi kobashi: March 2014

http://kimikobashi.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Finding inspiration in the everyday. The entire canvas is fairly large, which I'll show you next. The original painting was rather exuberant and somehow I felt in the mood to carry that forward, but hoped to connect some of the elements that were previously only sketched in or contained only washes of color. The only problem was that I wasn't sure what I wanted. So, I tried something new and cut out shapes in painters tape to see the outlines of what I might try. But before I go, here are a couple more p...

Finding inspiration in the everyday. Mailbox: from apolonia of st ainolopa. Lucky, lucky me! S card giveaway and. I won! As soon as I opened the envelope I was utterly in love with the rabbit she drew for me. Its shape is so adorable and its big, thoughtful eye pulled me in right away. Love at first sight! And her signature bright colors look so good. The little card to the right of the bunny is her business card. Such a nice one! Twitter. twitter.com/stainolopa. Do visit all three! On her etsy shop.

kimi kobashi: ink & pouring medium experiment

http://kimikobashi.blogspot.com/2013/05/ink-pouring-medium-experiment.html

Finding inspiration in the everyday. Ink and pouring medium experiment. I've had this pouring medium sitting on my shelf for quite a while and finally decided to try it out and see what it does. I used an Ampersand watercolor panel but later realized that it was kind of a waste since the pouring medium doesn't really need the panel's special properties of absorbency and such. However, it was nice to have a clean, white and sturdy surface. By the time the entire surface was covered, the ink had spread qui...

Olive & Cédille: Oktober!

http://oliveandcedille.blogspot.com/2009/10/via-losangelous.html

Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Sitting in traffic, there's a new hot dog joint in Dowtown LA that's been calling my name. They specialize in sausages (exotic ones, too, like buffalo, duck and, gulp, rattlesnake). They have Belgian beer and fries. Ah, my kind of place. Read all about it in the article from the LA Times. kimi kobashi: drawing

http://kimikobashi.blogspot.com/2013/03/drawing.html

Finding inspiration in the everyday. The class focuses mainly on duplication, which is not exactly what I hoped for because I feel that my weakness is that I tend to be too. Accurate. I can get all the angles, sizes and shades right, but I wish I could do that with freer strokes and not lose expression due to all the precision. I think I'd rather have an emotionally strong piece than a technically strong one, wouldn't you? That's what I'd like. To work on as an artist. Accurate. (Boringly so? Youve inspi...

Hippo Butt

Friday, February 24, 2006. Boy, I haven't seen anybody naked, particularly my friends, lately. Odd, because the swelling has gone down. Maybe I'll be lucky this weekend and a streaker will streak by Gigi'! Posted by hippo butt at 5:23 PM. Thursday, October 20, 2005. I am consistently perplexed. Cooter is always telling me she's straight, but now she says she owns a homo. What do do you do with a homo if not something disrespectful, and naked? Posted by hippo butt at 1:24 PM.
