Covent Garden and Holborn. The City of London. Covent Garden and Holborn. Covent Garden and Holborn are the areas that connect the two citys of Wesminster and London. Lying along the north bank of the Thames they contain the home of the judiciary with Bow Street magistrates court (at the home of the first police force), the Royal Courts of Justice and Temple Bar, Inner Temple and Lincoln's Inn Fields as well as Somerset House and the Royal Opera House.

The City of Westminster and Whitehall -1. The City of London. Covent Garden and Holborn. London is, to misquote Charles Dickens, a 'Tale of Two Cities'. One is the City of London (the centre for commerce), the other the City of Westminster (the centre of government). Once separate, the two ran into one another in Medieval times. VICTORIA STREET, WESTMINSTER, WITH THE ARMY AND NAVY STORES. Walk forwards, down Victoria Street, towards Parliament Square passing through Broad Sanctuary. The bulk of the build...

The City of London. The City of London. Covent Garden and Holborn. Blackfriar's Bridge still copes with the modern rush of traffic - a tribute to its Victorian builders. Not so the old railway bridge seen on the original photograph. The piers for it remain, but a new bridge, and a new station (Blackfriars rather than St Paul's) were built just to the east of the old. The view of St Paul's is still blocked. All materials (except where specifically acknowledged) (c) People First Solutions Ltd. 2005.

As you look through these photos notice the complete absence of motor vehicles. The London that we know today is a product largely of growth initiated during the Victorian era. Over the more than 60 years of Queen Victoria's reign (1837 to 1901) London grew to be the largest and most powerful city that the world had ever seen. In all an incredible series of inven...
