Ever wonder how this part of Boston got its strange name? The answer, along with many other interesting facts are peppered across this map, as I try to bring the neighborhood to life in this upright print. Early settling along Stony Brook, and the beginnings of industry are detailed, as well as the setting aside of various parklands that would become integral parts of the Emerald Necklace park system that winds its way through Boston. What can I say? I was in a mood to try something different.

Boston grows rapidly in the post-civil-war years. A great fire erases buildings in a large chunk of the downtown area, which is re-built. Parks are added to the Charles bank, more areas are filled in, huge railroad depots are constructed, and many inventions are made in this 'city of firsts'. The intrigue of Boston Politics also is detailed in this print. At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, Boston is poised at a precipice of change, and war was looming. This neighborhood had one of the more interesting histories to research. Begun as Little Cambridge and later split off to form its' own community, Brighton was originally a quiet pastoral town. Soon the industry of the cattle trade came to the area, and Brighton became the wild wild west of Boston. Stockyards covered the area, and cattlemen, and ranchers haunted the many saloons, and inns. The 36X24print is dated 2008, and glows with warm rust-like tones. Price: $100.00 plus shipping. Mouse over to zoom.
