Henry Cavendish 1731 - 1810

http://www.historyofelectronics.com/Sub/Cavendish.htm

Excerpts from Much Ado About Almost. Cavendish was born into nobility in 1731. His father was the son of the Duke of Devonshire, his mother the daughter of the Duke of Kent. At 18 Cavendish went to Cambridge, stayed there for four years, but didn't graduate. After Cambridge he moved back into his father's house in Lon-don. His father, Lord Charles Cavendish, was a Member of Parliament and a skilled experimenter in science. The younger Cavendish experimented, too, and soon surpassed his father. The senior...

Andrẻ Marie Ampere 1775-1836

http://www.historyofelectronics.com/Sub/Ampere.htm

Andrẻ Marie Ampere. Excerpts from Much Ado About Almost. Ampere was born in Lyons. His father was a rich merchant who soon after the son's birth retired from business and moved his family to a small village outside Lyons. Ampere was a puny, sickly, precocious child; he learned to calculate by himself with pebbles before he could talk. He was taught at home and became a wizard in mathematics. By this time he had read the 20 volumes of Diderot's and d'Alambert's freethinking Encyclopedie cover-to-cover.

Niels Bohr 1885 - 1962

http://www.historyofelectronics.com/Sub/Bohr.htm

Excerpt from Much Ado About Almost. Rutherford was visited by a young Dane, Niels Bohr, who had obtained his Ph.D. in Copenhagen and had come to England to work with J.J. Thomson. But Thomson somehow didn't show much interest in Bohr's work and Bohr latched on to Rutherford. They were as different as any two men could be. Rutherford, a large, exuberant man with a booming voice, was given to uncontrollable excitement and worked with immense gusto. They tend to go to the lowest state of energy, the innermo...

William Crookes 1832 - 1919

http://www.historyofelectronics.com/Sub/Crookes.htm

Excerpts from Much Ado About Almost. Crookes worked mostly outside established research institutions. He was born in 1832, the son of a prosperous tailor with 15 other children. After some irregular schooling he studied at the Royal College of Chemistry in London and made contact with Faraday and Wheatstone. In many ways Crookes was similar to Faraday: both men were brilliant experimenters and lecturers, well organized and orderly in their procedures and largely ignorant of mathematics.

Charles Francois Dufay

http://www.historyofelectronics.com/Sub/Dufay.htm

Excerpt from Much Ado About Almost. In 1733 Charles Francois Dufay learned about Gray's experiments. The 35‑year‑old Dufay had been a soldier. His main interests were in chemistry, anatomy, mechanics and botany and he had already contributed a number of original papers to the French Academy. Dufay absorbed the new subject of electricity rapidly. He experimented and found that twine conducted best when wet and that metals were better conductors. He said, there are two kinds of electricity, not just one.
