Spartan Considerations: Yet Again, Not Again
http://spartanconsiderations.blogspot.com/2015/04/yet-again-not-again.html
Monday, April 27, 2015. Yet Again, Not Again. The spirit-crushing reality is that the events in Baltimore can happen in America anywhere, at anytime. It may not be a case of eternal recurrence, but it is undoubtedly an extremely persistent one. Recognizing that reporting on historic and structural matters (racism, poverty, alienation, the ongoing existence of at least two de facto. Quiet heroism in the midst of adversity. These are true patriots. Twenty-five years later, the Los Angeles unrest witnessed ...

Kirstycat's Meow! (and sometimes Growl!): February 2015
http://kirstycat1209.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Mom of a beautiful little girl, married to a wonderful guy - loving travel, politics and books (preferably simultaneously! Tuesday, February 24, 2015. As loyal readers to this page know, I've become more involved in the educational system and the sausage-making of our Howard County school budget. And it IS sausage-making. Ugly. These cuts affect ALL children. If kindergarten has 4 teachers for 80 kids, 1 paraeducator makes the ratio fall from 20:1 to 16:1. That's a major difference, loyal readers! If you...

Kirstycat's Meow! (and sometimes Growl!): March 2015
http://kirstycat1209.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Mom of a beautiful little girl, married to a wonderful guy - loving travel, politics and books (preferably simultaneously! Friday, March 27, 2015. I grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland, an affluent area with some of the most amazing public schools. I attended one, Washington Grove, for kindergarten. At that time, kindergarten was half-day and it may have been parental choice. They answered some questions from the audience although they tinted the answers with rose-colored glasses. One of the principal...

Kirstycat's Meow! (and sometimes Growl!): Scheduling Summer
http://kirstycat1209.blogspot.com/2015/07/scheduling-summer.html
Mom of a beautiful little girl, married to a wonderful guy - loving travel, politics and books (preferably simultaneously! Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Now that school's out, I'm having a toddler-like reaction to the craziness of summer. Ah, summer - time to schedule all those appointments - no need to worry about school! That's PERFECT. Whew. Crisis avoided there. Until the following day when I received a reminder from her orthodontist about her appointment at 4:50 on Monday. Irrelevant question, ok? I choose...

The Howard County Rudkus Report: A + B = C’mon really? Or the Superintendant talks to teachers.
http://hocorudkusreport.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-b-cmon-really-or-superintendant-talks.html
The Howard County Rudkus Report. Monday, June 1, 2015. A B = C’mon really? Or the Superintendant talks to teachers. In response to my school budget post I received an email from a County teacher, attached was a message (s)he had received from Superintendent Foose after the passage of the budget. Paragraph one of the email says:. The second important statement is the $11.5 million included for salary increases. That’s more important in the narrative with the addition of the next paragraph. 8220;I am espec...

The Howard County Rudkus Report: Love Wins. Teachers Lose. (Not Causal)
http://hocorudkusreport.blogspot.com/2015/07/love-wins-teachers-lose.html
The Howard County Rudkus Report. Thursday, July 2, 2015. Love Wins. Teachers Lose. (Not Causal). Two completely unrelated things today. It’s not a round up. Don’t call it that. First, love wins. Of course there was a sea of social media around the Supreme Court decision (you may have seen some of it) and County Executive Kittleman tweeted “Proud to have championed marriage equality in the MD Senate and across the state b/c it was the right thing to do.”. My first reaction was to be a bit annoyed at this.

The Howard County Rudkus Report: Power Concedes Nothing Without A Demand
http://hocorudkusreport.blogspot.com/2015/06/power-concedes-nothing-without-demand.html
The Howard County Rudkus Report. Friday, June 5, 2015. Power Concedes Nothing Without A Demand. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."- Frederick Douglass. After my last post I started to think more about teachers/administration in comparison to a traditional worker/management “fight.” [1]. Workers have pretty much always been painted as the selfish ones, thinking only about themselves and not about the greater good. While I could make a compelling argument that the det...

Life's little comedies: February 2011
http://lifeslittlecomedies.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Everyone has a crazy life. This is mine. Saturday, February 26, 2011. Living Easy in the HoCo. Howard County is a really pretty place to live, the schools are excellent, the population is wonderfully ethnically diverse, there is too much snow for my taste and homes are really expensive, er, valuable. I don't think HoCo is perfect, but honestly, there are so many positives that it really astonishes me when people show such crazy outrage over something like subsidized housing. ( Sun article here. That sent...
