Separate timelines have been agreed for the transition schemes (Emerald, Eton, St George and Theodore) and the investigation schemes (Bundaberg, Burdekin-Haughton, Mareeba-Dimbulah and Lower Mary). The process was developed after each scheme submitted business proposals to government for ownership and management of the irrigation channels at the end of 2014. Transition board undertakes preliminary assessment of viability of local management based on the offer,. By 31 January 2017. By 31 October 2017.

Constructed in the 1970s the area irrigated by the distribution system is about 40,000 hectares, sourced mainly from the Burnett but also the Kolan rivers. Sugar cane, tomatoes, rockmelons, watermelons, capsicum, chillies, zucchini, beans, peanuts, macadamia nuts, citrus and avocados. About 890 irrigators and less than 10 non-irrigators. An interim board has been established to investigate the option of local management for the Mareeba-Dimbulah channel scheme, which has an area of about 17,000 hectares and around 1,000 irrigators. We have been investigating what benefits managing the scheme locally could have for customers and have prepared a consultation draft of our business proposal (link below) for your feedback, prior to presenting a final proposal to government.
