China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Saturday, November 18, 2006. Friday, Oct. 27, 2006. Georgetown, being quite close to the Thai border, was a natural place for us to close out our time in Malaysia. In the morning, we took a minibus across the border in Hat Yai, where we had planned to fly through Bangkok, via Asia Air, to Chiang Mai. Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006. Sadly, that was kind of it. Tuesday, Oct. 24 ,2006. At 7AM, at a cost of 2 ringgit apiece, we caught boarded the cit...

Hole Grain Travels: October 2006
http://holegraintravel.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Thursday, October 26, 2006. Pulau Tioman (Tioman Island). Monday, Oct. 16, 2006. I went scuba diving, and saw my first turtle! On the boat ride back we saw a dead turtle, bobbing along in the water. Sad. He probably got hit by a boat or caught in a fishing net. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006. A walk to Tekek, the main town on the island, was only notable for the red bean and coconut popsicle I had, which was frickin' delicious. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006. Posted by Stefanie at...

Hole Grain Travels: September 2006

China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Saturday, September 30, 2006. A better sense of Manila. The drivers also sit on the same side. Funny how that looks strange to me now. Also, there are tons of people sitting out on the sidewalk, all the time. I don't know if it's because of the power outtage, or because it's the weekend or what. Lots of people everywhere. Hole Grain Travels: Go China! Zhongguo, jia you!
http://holegraintravel.blogspot.com/2008/07/go-china-zhongguo-jia-you.html
China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Monday, July 14, 2008. Zhongguo, jia you! Quick recap: after six weeks of assessing in China following the May 12 earthquake, we called it - no go. Here's my verbose recap of my time here. I first posted this on the HODR Blog. Also posted their recaps as well. I think that together, the three posts make a pretty fair, fun account of what happened. We also reach out to NGO contacts with whom we’ve worked in the past to establish links and email personal contacts in-...

Hole Grain Travels: September 2007
http://holegraintravel.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html
China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Wednesday, September 12, 2007. The project has only been open for five days, but we already have 25 people here! We're clearing rubble and doing demolition work, but a couple new projects are already underway. On Friday, we'll do a beach cleanup in a neighboring community, on Saturday we'll do games and activities for children living in the shelters and tent camps, and next Monday, we'll start digging holes for the columns of a school rebuilding project. This commu...

Hole Grain Travels: November 2007

China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Tuesday, November 27, 2007. Farewell Peru, on to Bangladesh. So the plan was to stay in Peru and work on Project Pisco until the end of January 2008, take time off, and make it back to the US in February 2008. While the project will continue on as scheduled, I'm off to Bangladesh to help HODR make an assessment of the damages and impact of Cyclone Sidr, which struck the southwest part of the country on 15 November 2007. Hole Grain Travels: August 2007
http://holegraintravel.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Thursday, August 23, 2007. After the excitement of yesterday, basically all of our plans for today fell through. I guess that's just how it works sometimes. Instead, tomorrow we'll meet with the Peace Corps volunteers (it's their swearing-in ceremony, so conveniently everyone will be there) and a rep from USAID, the international development arm of the US government. I'm ready to just go. Today we stopped by the South American Explorers. It's winter here right now,...

China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Sunday, August 20, 2006. Independence Day - Part II. I am at Super Wonderful Fast Internet Cafe with a spacebar that works! This means. pictures. Since I'm working on that, there will be a little less time for detailed blog posts. Sunday, August 20, 2006. Everyone was dressed in white, and the prayers echoed from the loudspeakers over the plaza. I've been here for 3 hours, so I get a free softdrink. That's fun! Boy 1: "I'm a coward.". China earthquake assessment, July 2008. Tuesday, December 12, 2006. After Malaysia I visited Thailand and China. I spent three weeks visiting the terracotta warriors of Xi'an, the pandas and teahouses of Chengdu (four baby pandas in a row lying in a crib, so cute! The Three Gorges (and Three Small Gorges, and Three Mini Gorges, who knew? Website. In the meantime, take care and wish me good luck! And oh yes, once we get set up, feel free to come on out and volunteer! Posted by Stefanie at 8:07 AM. An amaz...
