Hogscald During the Civil War. Most Hogscald locals were Southern sympathizers, and were more than willing to offer their support in favor of the Confederate cause. Another local legend regales a story of two small bands of soldiers - one Union and one Confederate - camped at Hog Scald Hollow one winter during the Civil War, and how they held a temporary truce for Christmas, to cook and share their holiday feast. Hogscald as Community Center. Hogs were turned loose in the woods, and each year the early families would hunt and kill enough for that particular winter. Cora Pinkley-Call later recalled that, "No one ever thought of feeding hogs to fatten them." Uncle Jap's Whiskey Coup. The following "Hog Scald" story, written by John Jennings, appeared in the 1930 book by Cora Pinkley-Call titled Pioneer Tales of Eureka Springs. The Church at Hogscald. Prominent Ozark author Otto Earnest Rayburn remarked that the pioneers of Hogscald were "the salt of the earth in character. Religion was the bullwark of their natures." It should come as no surprise that as the smoke cleared from the war between the states, the devout people of this area longed for a suitable place of worship. Local author Cora Pinkley-Call pays tribute to the good Reverend in her 1930 book titled Pioneer Tales of Eureka Springs. The Origins of Hogscald.
