Hokie adventures in the Peace Corps. Monday, January 10, 2011. The Never Ending Update. First things first, I want to wish all of you that read this a happy new year and I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I always get a little bit homesick right around this time of year but luckily I live near some wonderful people and I think I speak for us all when I say we had a very nice holiday… but more on that later. Hokie adventures in the Peace Corps. Monday, May 16, 2011. The Funny Side Of Life. A RPCV who was back visiting Cameroon just recently told me, “You know Kate if you have the right sense of humor Cameroon is a pretty funny place to live”. I agree with this statement 100%. Some of the situations I’ve found myself in over the past 17 months can only be described in degrees of hilarity. Let me paint you a picture…. Food of any kind, tissues, chap stick, candy, and pens. So there you have it, my simple trip ...

Monday, February 21, 2011. 9 out of 10 Dentists Agree. 8230; a whole wheel of cheese? I’m not even mad… I’m impressed ;). However, in spite of my case of the Bankim blues I have been able to get a little bit of work done and I have a great story to tell you, so get pumped! Hokie adventures in the Peace Corps. Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Good Morning From Ethiopia! Day 2: We boarded our flight and waved goodbye to Cameroon. It wasn't until we touched off that it really hit. this is it, so long to Cameroon. We spent pretty much the entire day flying with a layover in the Central African Republic and Ethiopia. As I type this I have just been roused from my AMAZING hotel bed (thank you Ethiopian airlines! And and getting ready to head back to catch the last leg of your flight.

Hokie adventures in the Peace Corps. Friday, March 25, 2011. Girls Just Want To Have Fun. Here are some of the highlights from International Women’s Day 2011:. I was on the panel for the round table discussion where we talked about equality for women. It wasn’t as much a round table as it was a “I like to hear myself talk into a microphone hour (more like 4 hours) but I was in charge of publicity and we had a great turnout so I was pleased ☺. The Land of the River of Shrimp: Tuesday, February 09
http://cameroonzara.blogspot.com/2010_02_09_archive.html
The Land of the River of Shrimp. Or more accurately, the Land of Mangos and Avocados. The internet is dangerous to have. I need to remind myself that it is to be used as a resource, not as a source of endless distraction. Guess which I've been doing more of! It's been cloudy and cool the last 2 days, much like Humboldt weather, which is LOVELY. Last night there was some rain on the tin roof, and I felt very relaxed. I need more art in my life. In a doing art sort of way. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My ma...

The Land of the River of Shrimp. Or more accurately, the Land of Mangos and Avocados. What's been up lately? Gosh, you have no idea, huh? It's been awhile since the last blog. Today I went to Bafoussam to get my internet back (disappeared for a week), get the key to my new post-box (write me! And to pick up a few things. I scored 2 pairs of perfect fitting pants from the frip for a reasonable price, yesss. Anyway. Here is my new address:. Tres simple, n'est-ce pas? America candy, whatevs. Yes, he says...

The Land of the River of Shrimp. Or more accurately, the Land of Mangos and Avocados. Home again, home again, after a long week in Baham doing girls' camp. Wow! I've come home to a very lonely cat. I'm sure he'll be very sad that I'm leaving again come Sunday for another girls' camp in Bandrefam. Then my APCD left. So Saturday and Sunday were more laid back than planned, but we had fun with the peer educators and talking about what it means to be a peer educator and a woman, what is puberty, how can you ...

The Land of the River of Shrimp. Or more accurately, the Land of Mangos and Avocados. Why Leaving the Peace Corps Was the Best Decision I've Made Since Joining the Peace Corps. Well, I meant to write a wrap-up/conclusion earlier, but here it is 5 months later and I'm still looking for the words to say. It's hard to believe I left Cameroon over 5 months ago, and my stage-mates are still there for another 3 or 4 months still! What were the biggest factors contributing to my problems? For me, anyways. A...

http://cameroonzara.blogspot.com/2010_05_09_archive.html
The Land of the River of Shrimp. Or more accurately, the Land of Mangos and Avocados. Waking up today was much the same as everyday. I sleep in as long as possible, because it is inconceivable that there is anything more comfortable than my bed. Today, this meant getting up at 9. What a lazy bum I am! Once inside I look at the report that I have all but finished translating and realize that I have a golden opportunity to actually do some work. And I walk out the door! So I tape up my flip-charts and a li...

The Land of the River of Shrimp. Or more accurately, the Land of Mangos and Avocados. Qu’est-ce qui se passe? That is to say, what is up? Well Two nights ago it was raining something fierce. I was watching the waterfall on the steps in front of the house and thinking, “Hmm. I hope it doesn’t flood! I snatch up my pile of maybe-dirty clothes (or can I get another day out of them? And (ever so smartly) snagged my voltage regulator out of the growing lake (no electrocution, lucky me, and it still works!

My Peace Corps Journey in Cameroun. I just got back from a two week vacation in Senegal. It was a badly needed vacation so that I could relax eat anything my heart desired. I met my friend from college, Clint, and we stayed at fancy hotel in the heart of Dakar. It was right on the coast, with an amazing breakfast buffet, and a gorgeous pool where you could sun tan and hear the waves crashing. I never thought I would be able to do any of that in Africa, but it was awesome! We ended the trip by simply rela...

My Peace Corps Journey in Cameroun. Cameroon to Tanzania to Thailand. These past few months have just seemed to fly by. So much happening and so quickly. In December I really started to tie up loose ends in Cameroon and bring my work at UNICEF to a close. It was a really bittersweet time. During my last week in Cameroon, which also happened to be the first week of 2013, I was lucky enough to have a good group of PCVs in the capital. It was a great way to start off the new year. I then met my friends, Ans...

Hokie adventures in the Peace Corps. Tuesday, January 3, 2012. I'm on a crunch for internet time so here's all the highlights from our stay in South Africa thus far:. We had a Mongolian BBQ and spent the evening cuddling with a pair of humongous Canadian Timber Wolves (our host was involved with volunteering a a wolf shealer). Off to Cape Town!
