Random thoughts from a Methodist minister in inner city London. Customer service →. Hymn of the week: To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise. September 19, 2014. Like it or loathe it, harvest festival season is upon us. I have already written in a previous post about the wonderfully eccentric Revd Hawker. Which brings us to the Hymn of the Week. It’s one of the traditional harvest hymns which we will be singing on Sunday. I’m a bit surprised that it made the cut to. To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise’ wa...

Random thoughts from a Methodist minister in inner city London. Hymn of the week: To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise. Come, all you people! March 13, 2015. As I thanked her for her assistance, she said “Next time you’ll know what to do.” Use the counter? I wonder whether they will let me suggest that I preferred the experience of a two minute transaction with a human being rather than five minutes wading through menus and options on a machine? I just found out that officially this is a ‘Self Service Ki...

Lay Speaking Chick: April 2012
http://layspeakingchick.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Friday, April 27, 2012. The More Things Change. In an essay titled “Sabbath Morn,” written in February, 1939, Mr. White made the following observations:. What a familiar tale, I think to myself! How similar and relevant are Mr. White’s words today? Until we can do that, until we can accept the fact that there is nothing new under the sun, all of our best laid plans will be nothing more than just another plan. Labels: E.B. White. Like I said, it has ...
Lay Speaking Chick: Sermon Notes for A Service of Jubilee
http://layspeakingchick.blogspot.com/2012/06/sermon-notes-for-service-of-jubilee.html
Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Sermon Notes for A Service of Jubilee. Last, but not least, the sermon notes. When I preach, I do not go word for word based on what I've written. The notes do, however, keep me on track so I don't wander too far afield! The Importance of Jubilee. Why should we care? The idea of Jubilee is woven throughout the Bible. The when and how are not as important as WHY. Why did God put forth the idea of Jubilee? 8220;For I know the p...
Lay Speaking Chick: American (church) Idols of the 21st Century
http://layspeakingchick.blogspot.com/2012/06/american-church-idols-of-21st-century.html
Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Friday, June 22, 2012. American (church) Idols of the 21st Century. I have been re-reading my copy of "An Introduction to Christianity" by Alister E. McGrath, which I picked up many years ago. It is a wonderful, basic, introduction to how we got here in the first place! Every couple of years or so, I go back and read it again, as a refresher, because it is just that good! What result did we Methodists clearly see coming out of General Conference?
Lay Speaking Chick: November 2011

Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Spending Time in the Back End of the Hymnal. Have you ever actually looked at the services at the end of the Methodist Hymnal? I was looking through the hymnal this morning cause I am still on the quest to shake my Grinch mood! I really love the prayer from the morning praise and prayer service! Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Watch out Mr. Grinch! Today, I could give the Grinch a run for his money! Which has translated int...

Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Monday, February 27, 2012. Finding Your Spirit Song. So, did you give up something for Lent? Chocolate or soda perhaps? My great-grandmother understood this well! Apparently she would open the windows of the house, even in the dead of winter, for five to ten minutes, every day, in order to let fresh air in to the house. She said it made it easier to heat the house and keep it warm, once you did that! Are you willing to be uncomfortable and to confro...

Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Oh my darling readers, where to begin? These are the days that the Lord has made. I will rejoice, and be glad! Here it is, the last day of January, and I am busily doing laundry to hang out on the clothes line. The smell of laundry fresh in from the line is utter bliss, in my opinion! The weather over the last few days has been gorgeous here in Missouri! The mail brought a pleasant surprise as well! The book is even more a...

Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Monday, October 31, 2011. An Interesting Footnote on Hebrews 2:14-15. Here's the note from the Wesleyan Study Bible-see what you think. Agree or disagree? Do people accumulate wealth and strive for recognition and acclaim because deep down they fear death? Interesting question to ponder. Friday, October 28, 2011. Pay Attention to Whispers from God. As I looked through my notes though, one thing really jumped out at me and it is something I have been...
Lay Speaking Chick: Those Pesky Little Questions and Details!
http://layspeakingchick.blogspot.com/2012/07/those-pesky-little-questions-and.html
Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Those Pesky Little Questions and Details! How can this be important for anyone today? Back in elementary school, we learned about the proper way to evaluate a story. We had to be able to identify who, what, where, when, how and why. Who were the main characters? What was the story about? Where was the story taking place? When were these events happening? How were they going about resolving the story? Who is in charge? There...
Lay Speaking Chick: Background on The Creation of A Service of Jubilee
http://layspeakingchick.blogspot.com/2012/06/background-on-creation-of-service-of.html
Thoughts on Faith and Life from my "view from the pew". Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Background on The Creation of A Service of Jubilee. Yes, it’s been awhile since I have posted anything, I know. Life has been busy! Between home and church I have kept hopping! Needless to say the stress-o-meter went full tilt at one point and I ended up in bed for a few days. If I made it through the day just getting the basics done and taken care of, it was a victory! The past few months have been, in a word, exhausting.

Random thoughts from a Methodist minister in inner city London. May 4, 2015. A pause for a group photo in Isabella Plantation. My teenage years were spent in Kingston-upon-Thames, where my father was minister of the Methodist Church in the town. Four brothers running to Quests and Adventures. Sunday, June 28, 2015. Outrun 24 Hour Trail Race. It has been almost two months now since Jason and I ran the Outrun 24 hour trail race in Kirtland, OH. I meant to write up something while the details were still fresh in my mind but you know how life gets busy. Anyway, here's the story of my race. See if you can spot us. We started at 8am under sunny skies, temperatures around 50 degrees. It warmed up quickly and was a beautiful day for the race. Jason and ...
