ランドルト環はフランスの眼科医エドマンド ランドルト(Edmund Landolt 1846-1926 によって開発され、彼の名前がそのまま名称となっている。 ランドルト環は黒色の円環で、円環全体の直径 円弧の幅 輪の開いている幅 5 1 1のサイズである。 日本では直径7.5mm、太さ1.5mm、の円の一部が1.5mm幅で切れている環を5m離れたところから見て正確に切れている方向がわかる能力を 視力1.0 としている[出典 1]が、ISOでは直径7.272mm、太さ1.4544mmと半端な数値が規定されている。 小数ではなく 20/20 6/6 のように分数で表す。 たとえば 7/7 の場合は7フィートの距離から7番目の環が識別できると言う意味であり、これが日本での1.0に相当する。 大まかな視力の表記として、A 視力1.0以上 、B 視力0.7以上1.0未満 、C 視力0.3以上0.7未満 、D 視力0.3未満 の4段階を用いることがある。 ちなみに視力検査の際に用いる片目を覆う器具を 遮眼子 、ランドルト環を指し示す棒を 視力指示棒 という。
