Bennelong Bridge was officially opened on Sunday 22 May 2016 by the Member for Drummoyne and Parliamentary Secretary for Roads, Transport, Industry Resources and Energy John Sidoti MP along with the Member for Auburn and New South Wales Opposition Leader, Luke Foley MP and the four Wentworth Point Landowners. The new Bennelong Bridge provides a direct link between two of Sydney's fastest growing communities. It creates a new landmark in Sydney's inner west and sets a benchmark for environmentally sustainable transport infrastructure in Sydney. Bennelong Bridge is the critical step in connecting Wentworth Point with Sydney's public transport network. The bridge dramatically improves access from Wentworth Point to the city's rail and bus networks and completes an important connection in the future cycle and pedestrian walk around the foreshore of Homebush Bay.

A bridge across Homebush Bay, linking Rhodes and Wentworth Point, was first identified in government planning documents as early as 2002. This early proposal was limited to pedestrian and cycle access. In 2010 an alliance of Wentworth Point landowners made up of Billbergia Group, Sekisui House, Homebush Bay Holding’s and Homebush Bay Properties, submitted a proposal to increase the bridge’s capacity to accommodate public transport.
