Getting real: Art disasters SY 2014-2015 - Ramblings from Ruwais

Getting real: Art disasters SY 2014-2015. One day, I remarked to a friend that I don't follow a homeschooling blog anymore. She asked, "Too perfect to be true, huh? Our art tissue paper has been in storage for the past several years. So. When I found an easy art project at Crayola, I presented it to the Princess. Alas, the end result was not realistic - the papers were only attached to the bond paper with water so when it dried, the colored tissues floated away . Is a post on Ruwais. Here. Is my original...

Teaching Philippine Social Studies - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/teaching-philippine-social-studies
Teaching Philippine Social Studies. This post was meant to be published on June 12, Philippines Independence Day, having been started on June 3, 2015. Still, better late than never! Frankly, I hate teaching this subject (required by Deped) because of the dry and boring textbooks we use. Then I met another townmate, a mother who sends her children to school but who admits to afterschooling them with GMA documentaries and what-not so as to prevent culture shock upon their return home. If it's going to make...

Serendipity (a history) and other things - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/serendipity-a-history-and-other-things
Serendipity (a history) and other things. Hmm I should post this in Ramblings from Ruwais' FB page but since I have not opened it for three days already (and I wish to go another week without Facebook), I am putting the link here. It details the history of the word SERENDIPITY which, if you've been reading this blog for a while, I like to use in describing the circumstances surrounding our homeschooling. So, what's the latest case of serendipitious learning at our house? Peat bogs and marshes . Please no...

Pi Day - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/pi-day
I feel so bad! For the past fortnight, I thought of shouting out loud to all about Pi Day come March 14. Alas! Twas the day that the hubby arrived and I was so busy cooking up a welcome dinner and getting the house clean that I completely forgot about what's so special about March 14 this year. Well, here's a pahabol: Pi Day in 2015 is when the first ten digits align to the nanosecond (is it nanosecond? Come 3.14.15 9:26:53. Is The Guardian's article on the man who invented pi and here.

When staying put in the Philippines makes sense - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/when-staying-put-in-the-philippines-makes-sense
When staying put in the Philippines makes sense. But It seems that even class or parents' income play a role in whether a child graduates from college in more developed countries. Today, The Guardian reported that. Bright children from disadvantaged backgrounds fall by the wayside at GCSE. And Yesterday, the NY Times put out an article that declared. Or the poor, the graduation gap is even wider than the enrollment gap. I'm Athena from the Philippines. This blog is a record of our homeschooling days ...

Math Activities (SY 2014-2015) - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/math-activities-sy-2014-2015
Math Activities (SY 2014-2015). Theoretically, our schoolyear ends on August 8, 2015. That's the day we enrolled at TMA last year. But. Life happens. In other words, we watched movies (our town got a mall two years ago), went to the beach on holidays, baked cookies, got together with homeschooling friends for playdates, travelled to the city for medical appointments, had two staycations in Dubai, etc . Solids are introduced in the fourth Lifepac (there's one for every month) so we printed math nets (she ...

Studying World War 2 - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/studying-world-war-2
Studying World War 2. January 15, 2015. A few days ago, a friend chided me for not recommending more books on this blog. I replied "But so few people ever bother to read my blog, I thought it wouldn't matter if I didn't write about the books we use! These are the readers for the fifth grader. The first grader, though, has already read several. Life in a Jar is the only nonfiction among the selection. If you look closely, you may notice that I bought two books on Irena Sendler - one for the fifth grader a...

Studying Picasso and Guernica - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/studying-picasso-and-guernica
Studying Picasso and Guernica. My daughter's question "Mama, who is (Je Suis) Charlie? At breakfast one morning ushered in our study of Picasso. For a moment, I hesitated before launching into an explanation of who Charlie is. The explanation ended with me reiterating (for the 11-year-old's benefit since he constantly asks what relevance art has to our present world) that if Art - or comics - has no impact, seven lives would not have been lost. In contrast, my daughter - who loves art and who likes to di...

Real Days - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/real-days
Reading at the book corner of Ace Hardware while Mama shops. Many times during the day I wonder how other HSing families do it. I really do. Especially after I see photos of smiling children happily doing their schoolwork. And finishing around lunchtime. Because the longer we homeschool, the later our starting time gets. I mean, we usually start around 10 or 11 am or even after lunch sometimes. Roughly the same time we're supposed to finish. Hey, I want them to grow tall! We take time to enjoy breakfast (.

On Keats, censorship and education - Ramblings from Ruwais
http://ramblingsfromruwais.weebly.com/homeschooling/on-keats-censorship-and-education
On Keats, censorship and education. I don’t know much about the state of censorship in schools elsewhere. Although reports about Pearson spying on students are disturbing; read about it here. So thankful we don't have to deal with that! So what prompted this introspection? My eighth-grader confided in me:. Mom, I can’t use Bright Star. My teacher rejected it. What’s the problem? My son’s rejoinder:. It’s got the words “ripening breasts.”. So the imagery conjures up a mood for sex … hmm … In...NOt discuss...
